Micro-Mosaics
2-Day Master Class
March 13 & 14
10am – 4pm
A rare opportunity to experience an ancient art form – re-thought using 20th century materials – and made world-famous by Cynthia Toops. In this workshop, we will learn to: mix colors; make the mosaic elements; set and finish our micro-mosaic treasures for use in pendants, brooches, rings, etc. No polymer clay or metal-working experience is necessary (though metalworkers may want to bring a finished bezel to work with).
Course #W10MC3 $245. (Materials fee: $20)
During a visit in the 1980’s to her native Hong Kong, Cynthia Toops discovered polymer clay and fell in love with the medium. Cynthia is inspired by 18th Century Italian micro mosaics, as well as the elaborate works of Mexico's Huichol Indians, who embed seed beads in hot wax. Adapting these styles to polymer clay, she developed techniques that work for her and are 'simple and very low-tech'. Using this technique of mosaic in her work, Cynthia is able to create tremendous richness, texture and subtle color variation on a single piece. Cynthia is widely published and exhibits and teaches throughout the United States. Beads and More was published by Cynthia and her husband, Dan Adams in 2008.
