A Glimpse of Thai Craft-Based Contemporary Art
Information
Even though Thailand is well-known for its craft and mass-produced decorative products, its craft-based contemporary art is relatively unknown to both local and international markets. Therefore it was my great pleasure to be able to let the world see the kind of craft-based contemporary art created by Thai artists within the past few years.
In this exhibition three fields of craft-based contemporary art are presented: ceramics (4), jewelry (3) and wood (1).
I hope you enjoy and appreciate the presentations, expressions and artistic skills of Thai craft-based contemporary artists and I hope the works selected here will give you a glimpse of Thai craft-based contemporary art as a whole.

About the curator:
Atty Tantivit, a native Thai who spent over 10 years in the US, left her former life in the science field back in 2003 to peruse her new-found passion of jewelry making. After many classes and workshops in the US and Europe, Atty returned to her hometown, Bangkok, to work as a jewelry designer/maker in 2006. Since then she continued to take classes here and there and was exposed to the world of contemporary jewelry art during her visits to Europe. She came up with the idea of opening the first gallery in Thailand specializing in contemporary art jewelry in Thailand in 2009. Though it's not an easy task, Atty feels that if she can fall in love with contemporary jewelry art, others can too...they just need to see more of what's out there. Moreover, at that time local jewelry artists who have recently returned to Thailand from abroad were having a hard time finding platforms locally to showcase their work. A specialized gallery seems to be the most sensible solution. After much research and planning, ATTA Gallery was born.
Officially opened in November of 2010, ATTA Gallery now represent about 30 local and international artists. The gallery holds 6-8 solo and group exhibitions per year. More information on ATTA Gallery can be found at its website at www.attagallery.com or on Facebook under ATTA Gallery.
As for Atty, she now wears many hats--jewelry designer/maker, ATTA Gallery gallery director, contemporary art jewelry advocate, educator, curator, collector and advisor to young students in the field of jewelry design. She hopes that her passion and effort will make a different in the field of contemporary art jewelry, both locally and internationally.

Thank you for visiting and becoming members of this group. I hope this gives you a better idea of what Thai contemporary craft artists have to offer. We don't get a lot of support and encouragement here at home so we have to look for exposure and opportunities abroad.
