The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

Jewelry artisans rely on their creative skills to conceptualize, construct, and present their pieces. But it makes more sense, and leads to better success on all levels, when jewelry artisans redefine jewelry design, not merely as a creative endeavor, but as a managed process, as well. First, this means understanding what they do as a system of integrated and interrelated choices. Second, this means understanding the implications for these choices at the boundary between jewelry and person.

On Sunday 25th February Poppy Porter and Steve Lawson bring their spellbinding music and live art show to Birmingham. Steve plays, Poppy draws what she sees. Poppy is synaesthetic - she 'sees' sound, and as the images appear on the paper, Steve treats the emerging art as a graphic score, folding it back into the music in a way that creates a glorious feedback loop of art influencing art.

It's an immersive experience, to watch the art take shape before your eyes, to hear the music morph and twist as it is improvised in response to the art. You need to see this!

Get tickets now - there are 20 'early bird' £5 tickets. It'll be £10 on the door, and regular advanced tickets will be £8. So get yours now.
Your ticket includes a download of the track 'To Hear With An Open Hand' from Steve's new solo album, PS, You Are Brilliant.

Funding for new research on digital technology and materials for prosthetics
The Institute of Making is delighted to receive funding for four new research projects that will focus on 3D and 4D printing platforms for producing prosthetic and orthotic liners, investigate how stretchable sensors embedded in liners can provide realtime computational feedback for management of comfort and skin health in users, and design and manufacture affordable body-powered prosthetics. These new awards continue our innovative research in material selection, design and digital manufacturing of prosthetics and orthotics. As part of these projects, we are excited to work closely alongside our partners in the Global Disability Innovation Hub, and with colleagues at universities throughout the UK and globally.
