The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

ACJ welcomes to its membership makers, collectors, curators, educators, gallerists and all who have in interest in or passion for contemporary jewellery. ACJ organises exhibitions, conferences, events, talks and workshops for its members and the public. We publish our print magazine Findings twice a year, send a monthly e-bulletin to members, packed with news, information & opportunities, and we run social media accounts which reach over 10,000 people with news and information - Facebook, Instagram, Twitter & YouTube. We do all this on an annual budget of about £25,000, funded by membership subscriptions. Would you like to donate to help us further this work? Any amount is welcome! PayPal donations can be made here:…Continue

An Exchange Student’s Research on Urushi

In 2011/12 I had the chance to spend 10 months as an exchange student at Toyama University’s Faculty of Art and Design, Takaoka campus in Japan. One of the things I spent most of my time with there, was to learn the basics of working with Japanese lacquer – urushi. Since I found there to be a lack of literature on the “how to” of urushi in English and the western world in general, I decided to put some of things I learned into a short research paper.

“An Exchange Students Research on Urushi” gives an overview of the basic materials and tools used when working with Japanese lacquer, as well as a step by step guide of how to create an urushi surface according to how I was taught to do it in my time as an exchange student. You can freely download the research paper from the link in the heading above, and while I am only a beginner and learner myself, I hope it gives some insight into the actual “how” of working with this wonderful material.

David Bielander
IDENTITY MARKERS
Opening event Tuesday 4 February, 5.30pm - 7.30pm

It is with great pleasure we welcome David Bielander back to Melbourne for his new solo exhibition, Identity Markers.
Swiss born, Munich based Bielander takes the familiarity of everyday objects and combines them with a witty abstraction to create truly uncanny artworks. His realm of inquiry encompasses the play of identity, belonging, dissonance, external perceptions and the opinions they create.
