Fabricated: An Exhibition of Wearable Art
Deadline for Entry: December 3rd, 2012
Exhibition Dates: February 2nd - March 3rd, 2013

Description: Fabricated is an all-media exhibition featuring “wearable art," which refers to individually designed pieces of handmade clothing or jewelry created as fine or expressive art. While the making of any article of clothing or other wearable object typically involves aesthetic considerations, the term wearable art implies that the work is intended to be accepted as a serious and unique artistic creation or statement. It is open to all artists nationally and internationally.

Juror: Rachel Timmins currently lives in Baltimore, MD, where she will complete her MFA in Studio Art at Towson University in 2012. She is a native of Buffalo, NY, where she received her BFA in Metalsmithing + Jewelry Design in 2009. Rachel’s work speaks about otherness, finding value in the devalued and finding comfort in belonging. Her wearable and sculptural works have been featured at the Design Museum in London, UK, The Masur Museum of Art, the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. You can view Rachel’s work in numerous publications such as Unexpected Pleasures published by Rizzoli Publications, Jewel Book published by Stichtingkunst Boek, Humor in Craft published by Schiffer Publishing and many of the Lark Books Showcase 500 series books.

Past Masters

28 November – 20 December 2012
Foyer Gallery, UCA Farnham

Private view
Thursday 29 November 2012, 6.30–9pm

Postgraduate alumni of the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) at Farnham are joining forces for a special exhibition and lecture series.

Past Masters, which runs from 28 November to 20 December 2012 at UCA Farnham’s Foyer Gallery, will showcase artwork by graduates of UCA’s diverse range of Masters’ disciplines for the very first time.

The free exhibition, which features bronze and glass sculptures, photography, jewellery, ceramics and textiles, is a unique opportunity to see works that have been shown at the Victoria & Albert museum, Tate Modern, the Royal College of Art, Barbican and a variety of galleries and art fairs around the world.

MA course leader, Sarah Sutherland, said: “We are really excited to welcome back past Masters students to show their work in an interdisciplinary exhibition.

“This is a unique opportunity to celebrate their achievements since graduating from UCA and to be proud of these stunning exhibits, which have been shown in prestigious galleries internationally, through a free exhibition for the public to enjoy.”

The flexibility of postgraduate study – either, one year at full-time or two years part-time – is often attractive to mature students or professionals who need to balance other commitments.

Sarah Sutherland said: “Those who join a Masters course are often mature students who have changed career or overcome adversity and want to develop their passion for the Arts."

The nine Past Masters are: Ceramicist Ros Perton who has exhibited in Japan, Korea, USA and China; John Joyce, whose bronze work was recently shown at the RCA; Tom McDowell will showcase his award-winning jewellery, some of which is currently on display at the Barbican; Photographer Richard Brayshaw, who has exhibited at the Mall Gallery; successful glassblower Bruce Marks returns with conceptual pieces from his MA; Tara J Murphy will showcase her award-winning jewellery; fashion designer turned Textiles Artist, Louise Anderson, will share her Japanese inspired work; retired cancer specialist Roger Buchananexplores pinhole camera techniques; and, fresh from the British Glass Biennale, the public will get to see Emma Rawson’s thought-provoking glasswork before she takes up a residency position with the National Trust.

Events

Past Masters will be complemented by a series of free lectures - both by senior members of the academic staff in lecture theatre W02, and an evening with the exhibiting artists in the Foyer Gallery.

Wednesday 5 December 2012, 6–8pm
Professor Anna Fox - 'Researching photography'

Wednesday 12 December 2012, 6–8pm

Goldsmiths’ Company Pavilion, Somerset House, 26-29 June 2013

Goldsmiths’ Company Pavilion 2013 is now open for entries.  To further promote our craftsmen, we have initiated an enlarged Goldsmiths’ Company Pavilion, a selling exhibition for jewellers and silversmiths at Somerset House, which I hope you will find useful and profitable.  This will be bigger and better than last year.

For those of you that exhibited as part of Goldsmiths’ Company Pavilion last year (East Wing Galleries), our space this year will be a double suite of rooms in the West Wing.  Being considerably larger, it will allow for a group of rooms for silversmiths.  We hope to link up with the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers to show our modern silver in context on modern furniture.

The spaces have been priced competitively (£950 ex. VAT) to encourage a cross section of craftsmen to apply.  Of course, the Promotion Department will be working very hard to drive clients, old and new, to visit us in these splendid new surroundings located in the West End.  Extra funds will be spent on making the whole event a destination.  Our marketing strategy will be overhauled and developed from the feedback we received from last year’s exhibitors.

Please find attached your application form and notes. The deadline is 5pm Monday 7 January 2013. Please follow these steps:

-
Save the attached form to your computer
-
        Close down your email
-
Open the form in Adobe Reader* (right click the mouse and choose “open with”, or if using a Mac, hold the Ctrl key down and click the mouse)
-
Complete the form and save it
-
Return as per instructions on the form

*You need Adobe Reader version 9.2 or above, if you don’t have it is available here
as a free and safe download:
http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/

Please take a little time to consider this opportunity for your business development and provide your response one way or the other by the deadline to allow us to gauge interest accurately.  Typed applications should be returned to Goldsmiths’ Hall by Monday 7 January, either by hand or by post (no applications will be accepted by email).  To apply please ensure that you read the attached Application Information.

If you have any queries about the application process, please contact Joanne Dodd (joanne.dodd@thegoldsmiths.co.uk), or call 020 7606 7010 (ext.2044). We look forward to receiving your forms.

Good luck with your application.

Kind regards,

Paul Dyson

“Borders separate but also unite.” (Octavio Paz)
Historically the relationship between Mexico and the United States has been complicated, deep, and conflicted. Due to geography, this relationship is unavoidable and comprised of many underlying currents: economic, political, social, cultural, ecologic and ideological.
La Frontera (The Borderlands) is the physical space where the relationship between Mexico and the U.S is most evident. In recent years, drug trafficking and violence have made it the focus of almost daily news. However, the extremely porous nature of the border allows not only the illegal passage of arms and drugs, but also ideas, money, projects, families, and culture.
The border is an environment of opportunity both legal and not. Nearly 2000 miles long, the U.S. – Mexico border is the most frequently crossed international border in the world. Companies use differences in labor and environmental regulations to their advantage and create discontent on both sides of the border. Since the 1980s economic and political refugees from Central America have swelled populations at the border and migrations across it. The construction of the 700-mile U.S. – Mexico Border Fence of the past several years is the most tangible symbol of failed politics.
The exhibition LA FRONTERA seeks to explore this physical space and what it represents. This is why we want jewelry artists to express how they understand this border.
Museo Franz Mayer (http://www.franzmayer.org.mx) houses Latin America’s largest collection of decorative arts. Opened in 1986, the museum is located in the historic center of Mexico City in the former San Juan de Dios monastery and hospital, an 18th-century structure which was rehabilitated for the museum. The Museum specializes in exhibitions of historic and contemporary decorative and fine arts.
Velvet da Vinci gallery (http://www.velvetdavinci.com) specializes in contemporary jewelry and craft- based sculpture. Established in 1991, the gallery is currently housed in a converted furniture factory on San Francisco’s Russian Hill.
Eligible Artists
All jewelers who have something to say about issues surrounding the U.S./Mexican border are encouraged to submit entries of original artwork. We will jury from images of actual pieces made for this exhibition.
Submission Requirement
You are welcome to submit one to three pieces. The materials and size are your choice. We prefer you send the submission by email or Dropbox but CDs will also be accepted.
Jurors will review submissions from digital images only.
Image Specifications
Please be sure the images accurately portray the artwork. The jurors reserve the right to reject accepted entries, if the work does not contain the same qualities as indicated by the image(s).
Digital images must be in jpg format, 300 dpi. Each file name must follow this precise format: your last name, first name, the image number (1–3) as it corresponds to the entry form on the application. Detail images should be numbered 1a, 1b, 2a, etc.
Each artist may submit up to three (3) entries (one entry equals one work of art). Additional images (up to two (2)) may include detail shots, shots of the reverse side, etc.
Images must include the following information on a separate sheet of paper (see attached form):
1. artist’s name
2. email address
3. artist’s address
4. title of work
5. medium (please be specific)
6. dimensions
7. year piece was made
8. a short paragraph referencing why you made this piece and its relationship to the U.S./Mexico
border
