Unexpected Pleasures is a celebration of current jewellery design and

examines what we mean by jewellery from a number of different

persp...

ectives. The exhibition traces the radical experiments of

contemporary jewellers who have challenged the conventions of jewellery

design. The exhibition also explores the essential meanings of jewellery,

celebrating jewellery from the point of view of both wearer and maker. The

exhibition will also bring together important work from around the world,

demonstrating the relationship between jewellery, art and design.

Throughout the year the Design Museum presents a series of educational

workshops, activities, talks and late-night events to encourage fun and

SWAROVSKI AT THE DESIGN MUSEUM
5 SEPTEMBER 2012 – 13 JANUARY 2013
Swarovski has been nurturing designers and architects for the past 10
years, commissioning them to produce a remarkable collection of works that
has served to define the face of contemporary creativity. In this exhibition,
the Design Museum and Swarovski work together with a new generation of
designers with a brief to explore the future of memory in the digital age.

Call for applications: Craft and Technology Residencies 2013

Are you a maker open to exploring ways in which craft skills and knowledge can contribute to science and technology and vice versa?

Watershed is offering three maker residencies to research new projects at the intersection of craft, technology and culture. Delivered in collaboration with the Crafts Council, i-DAT, the Autonomatic research group at University College Falmouth, and supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, this is a unique opportunity to explore process and practice, develop experimental works and make new connections.

The residencies are open to UK-based makers and will take place between January and March 2013. There will be one residency each at: Pervasive Media Studio (Bristol), i-DAT (Plymouth) and Autonomatic (Falmouth).

 Background to Bishopsland 

Bishopsland (nr Reading, Oxfordshire) provides post-graduate training workshops for silversmiths and jewellers. It was founded in 1993. Members spend one year living and working at the workshops before setting up on their own in pursuit of a professional career. Approximately 150 graduates have passed through Bishopsland The majority are achieving their ambition of running their own business; for some this means full time employment, for others their self-employment is part-time, supplemented by other work, usually in the same field. Around forty have gone on to take an MA degree, two thirds of which are at the Royal College of Art.

Background to requirement 

Since its founding in 1993, Bishopsland has been managed by its founders and principal, Penelope and Oliver Makower. Supported by the Trustees, the founders have developed Bishopsland to become the country’s pre-eminent post-graduate, residential silversmithing course. The requirement now is to employ an individual to support Bishopsland develop into an establishment which is resilient and which will be able to go forward without the founders once they retire. The post is fully funded for the next two years with the Trustees committed to raise the funding for this post thereafter. 

Other support (part-time) includes a marketing manager, admin x 2 (general and accounts). 

Experiences and profile of the Deputy Principal 

To thrive in this role we would expect the successful candidate to have the following profile and experience: 

 Arts/cultural background 

 Proven development and fundraising experience 

 Ability to work with and alongside a number of stakeholders 

 Strong self-organisation abilities and an eye for detail 

 Experience in organising exhibitions/shows/curators etc. 

 General management capabilities (managing people / budget control etc.) 

Principal roles and tasks 

Reporting primarily to Oliver Makower who acts as CFO and Development Director, the Deputy Principal will oversee the operations of the Trust. The Deputy Principal will also support the Principal, Penelope Makower (Artistic Director) who takes responsibility for the Workshop & all educational matters. Key aspects of the role are expected to be: 

 Exhibitions 

 Development and fundraising 

 Financial management 

 Communication 

 Recruitment of course applicants and graduate supervision 

 Masterclass programme 

 Trustee communication

Jonathan Parsons, Artist, Writer and Lecturer

Jonathan Parsons is an artist, writer and lecturer active since 1990. He came to prominence in 1997 when his dissected map sculpture Carcass (1994) was selected for inclusion in the notorious Sensation exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, which toured to Berlin and New York. Recent exhibitions include: The Art of Mapping(TAG Fine Arts, London), Abigail Reynolds & Jonathan Parsons: A Dialogue on Landscape & Constable (Salisbury Arts Centre), Waldweben (Kasteel Schuurlo,Belgium), and the Jerwood Sculpture Prize (Jerwood Space, London). He has taught Fine Art at numerous Higher Education Institutions around the country and is currently visiting lecturer in Fine Art at UCA, Farnham. His work is represented in public collections in the UK and private collections around the world. Jonathan is the lead artist for arc, the professional development programme for artists in South East, managed by the aspex gallery, Portsmouth.

 

 

The meeting is part of the Surrey Artist of the Year 2012 programme at the New Ashgate Gallery, supported by Baines Charitable Trust. The programme has been organised by New Ashgate Gallery in partnership with Surrey Arts.

Copper Clay with Sarah Macrae
Copper clay is a clay-like material that can be squeezed, rolled, shaped, textured and moulded but when it is fired in a kiln it becomes pure copper. Similar in composition to silver precious metal clay but much more economical, this is an ideal material to experiment with. Students on the course can expect to make at least one finished piece during the day.

Silver Literary Pendants with Sarah Macrae
Commit your favourite word, quote or poem permanently to metal using stamping or etching, use letterforms to create a decorative pattern and then roller print onto silver to make an individual and personal pendant.

Saturday 10 November
Moving Jewellery with Kate Groombridge
Spend the day making a stylish pendant or ring using simple silver smith techniques. Create a stunning piece, which incorporates moving elements. The course is suitable for beginners and intermediate level participants and will include cutting, soldering and shaping.
10am – 3pm, £48 including materials.

Saturday 24 November
Circle Brooches with Sarah Macrae
Back by popular demand and perfect for Christmas presents, Sarah Macrae will lead this exciting one-day workshop. Participants will learn new skills and come away with a beautiful roller printed brooch. Sarah will explain and teach you all the stages to design and make a stunning piece of jewellery.
