Just in case you have not seen the last few emails from Andrew, there are only 2 places left on Andrew's Jewellery Summer School in Sedbergh School in Cumbria this July in the UK.

 Jerwood Makers Open 2013

On 10 July five emerging artists will unveil the result of a unique commissioning opportunity from Jerwood Visual Arts, showcasing brand new work in an exhibition at Jerwood Space, London. The show will run until 25 August before touring the UK.

As part of Jerwood Makers Open 2013, commissions of £7,500 were awarded to conceptual maker Maisie Broadhead, jeweller Linda Brothwell, ceramicist Adam Buick, paper artist Nahoko Kojima and textile artist Roanna Wells, affording them a unique opportunity to freely develop new ideas central to their individual practice. With processes spanning embroidery and paper cutting to photography and film installation, the selected artists each employ high quality craftsmanship to explore and challenge traditional thinking in applied arts. 

These five artists were selected for Jerwood Makers Open from over 200 UK-wide applications, by an independent panel comprising internationally acclaimed designer Edward Barber, Director of Stanley Picker Gallery David Falkner, and artist and editor Bonnie Kemske. 

The exhibition will open at JVA at Jerwood Space, London, from 10 July to 25 August 2013, before touring the UK.

 Arrivals & Departures - Invitation for proposals

Farnham Maltings is a creative organisation that works with artists and communities to encourage the most people to make, see and enjoy the best art possible.

We are delighted to launch Arrivals & Departures which enables us to add an international element to our craft programme. Proposals are now being invited from craft makers in the South East and Hampshire regions to submit an idea to make an international visit for professional development which will enrich and underpin their contemporary craft practice. Suggested ideas could be a research study trip to discover new materials, meet a particular gallery to explore exhibition opportunities, or form new networks with other craft makers.

The aim of this project is to offer an exchange of knowledge, expertise and development of new skills for the craft maker, the international partner, and for our region in the South East and Hampshire. Each proposal should include ideas on how this exchange can be shared, documented and evaluated.

Budget: £1500

Deadline for proposals: Wednesday 31 July 2013

• 5 images of your work

• Up to 2 page A4 statement of your proposed visit including: 

• Information about you and your work

• Identify the international partner

• Description of the ambition of the trip

• What difference it would make to your practice

 Grants for the Arts Changes

Artists should be aware that from 1 July 2013 the application and assessment process for Grants for the arts will be changing. The changes include:

the threshold for small grants - this has been raised from £10,000 to £15,000

the application process

the way we appraise applications

the way we make decisions

Grants for the arts will continue to be an open-application funding programme responding to new ideas and new talent. The changes will mean that more of the Arts Council’s time is spent providing a range of development and pre application support to applicants. They hope this will raise the number of new applicants to the programme and the quality of applications. The changes will have no negative impact on success rates for applicants.

 Opportunity to showcase artwork in a prominent public site in Waverley

Waverley Borough Council is offering artists the opportunity to showcase artwork on a plinth located at the entrance of Waverley Borough Council’s offices in Godalming.

The Council encourages expressions of interest from individual artists as well as groups seeking to develop a changing programme of work. 

The plinth is outside and in a prominent public position so the work must be suitable for external conditions and pose no risk to the public.

The Council is unable to pay a fee but can provide expenses up to £500 per annum for the transportation and installation of work(s). We will also work with the artist to attract as much publicity as possible during the loan period including:

• Official press announcement 

• Private view / launch presided by the Mayor 

• plaque naming the creator of the work

• assistance with health & safety and installation

The plinth is offered by Open Competition and Waverley will consider both existing and new work. 

Criteria:

The Artist agrees to:

• loan the work to Waverley Borough Council for a period of one year at no cost other than expenses

• accept that the Council shall not be responsible for any damage or loss of the work howsoever caused

• arrange for the installation and removal of the work in liaison with the Council

• repair or remove the work should it become hazardous 

• liaise with the Council’s health and safety officer to ensure the work is safe and securely fixed to the plinth

Waverley Borough Council agrees to:

• provide public liability cover against public injury once the work is in place

• identify the artist as the creator of the work in any press or public announcements

• display the work on the plinth for the period of one year unless otherwise agreed by the artist

• support and assist the artist in-kind so he/she is able to gain as much as possible from the opportunity

• advise on any health and safety issues that may arise from the placement of the work

• manage the selection process fairly

For consideration, please send the following:

• Up to 5 photographs or drawings of the proposed artwork

• If creating a new work, include 2 photographs of previous works

• Current CV or tutor reference

• Written proposal outlining the concept of the work, the materials and any practical considerations including scale, durability, timescale, installation and expenses

Residency Opportunity
The maker-in-residence is aimed at a maker based in England. The aim of the residency is to offer a unique opportunity for a selected maker to take dedicated time to develop new work, re-assess his/her practice, and see their work in a different context during the residency period; 21 September – 10 November 2013.

Our residency programmes are themed and this year we are exploring how structures, some visible and others implied, might be used to uncover meaning, narrative, paradox or certainty.

The title for this year’s program, Convention T, refers to logician, mathematician and philosopher Alfred Tarski (1901-1983) who applied logic to sentence structure in order to make the truth visible through language. Tarski created a structure, a meta-language, that could be applied to real, everyday, language in order to generate true statements, defined by the sentence 'Snow is white if and only if snow is white.'

It is expected that the maker-in-residence will actively contribute to ongoing discussions on this theme with the other artists-in-residence as well as visitors to Wysing and Wysing staff.

The residency will take place from 21 September – 10 November 2013.

Residency application process:
There is no form to fill in to apply for residency. Instead Wysing asks applicants to provide the information listed below. We prefer emailed applications as a single PDF file (for this we recommend PDF Forge http://www.pdfforge.org/) and will only accept applications below 3mb in size. We are happy to receive MP3/4 files or CDs/DVDs instead of written applications.
• A statement on the theme and how you would aim to respond during a residency at Wysing under the theme Convention T (max 500 words)
• A general statement on your practice (max 500 words)
• A current CV
• A selection of 6 images or other relevant material (CDs, DVDs, etc)

The artist’s fee, travel and production for the residency is a total of £4,000 alongside free shared accommodation, a studio and curatorial support during the 8 weeks.

Escalator Retreat at Wysing Arts Centre - call for proposals
Wysing Arts Centre invites proposals for the artistic retreat How We Make and How We Might Make.
Open to any artist, maker, writer and curator living and working in England. Wysing invite participants to explore underlying concepts around processes of making, materiality and craft.
During five immersive and reflexive days selected participants will lead their own workshop, take part in the activities led by others and join in talks by invited speakers as a means of exploring their practice, sharing ideas, and approaching their work from other perspectives.
The retreat will take place from Monday 9 - Friday 13 September
