Making Space Brochure, May – August 2013

Out now.. summer brochure which features creative classes, workshops and events running at Making Space from May to August 2013. We have workshops to suit everyone: 5-week and 10-week evening classes for adults, Saturday workshops and children’s summer holiday activities - all offering tuition in a range of crafts from jewellery, glass and textiles to ceramics, print-making and photography.

Highlights of the summer season include:

A 5-week morning workshop in Textile Printing & Painting with Rachel Reynolds: explore pattern, print and texture using a variety of printing techniques. Starts Tuesday 14 May, 10.30am-12.30pm.

Wendy Dolan’s Adult Saturday workshop in Machine Embroidered Book Covers: Enjoy a day making designs for book covers. Saturday 4 May, 10am-4pm.

Children’s Summer School: take part in up to eight different craft activities over a week then create an exhibition showcasing all of your work to show your family and friends. Activities include shadow puppets, willow sculptures, modrock masks and cartoon comics. Monday 12 August to Friday 16 August.

New this season: Early Bird Offer! We are offering anyone who books and pays for any Adult Saturday workshop 5% off if they book before 19 April.

The box office will be open for bookings at 10am on Tuesday 2 April - you will not be able to book before this date. To book a place, please call the office on 02392 472491 or email admin@makingspace.org.

After a week of tense voting, the winners of Professional Jeweller’s Treasure competition 2013 have been revealed as Rosita Bonita, Smith/Grey and Tessa Metcalfe. The three jewellery brands, which have now each won a stand at June jewellery selling show Treasure in London, battled it out as part of a shortlist of 10 to win votes on professionaljeweller.com. The competition attracted a high level of voting with 16,600 votes placed in the seven days of the competition. During this time the website received 28,100 visits and generated 87,061 page views. The finalists’ PR activity - which included securing features in newspapers and magazines, heavy promotion through social networking sites and running competitions to win jewellery - appeared to pay off with more than 66.62% of visitors in the seven days being new to professionaljeweller.com. The three winners have distinctly varying styles making this year’s selection an exciting line-up. Rosita Bonita works with screen-printed or foil-embossed leather to make large statement necklaces, Smith/Grey creates striking originality and bold motifs such as tumbling horses and roughened signet rings, and Tessa Metcalfe makes jewels from casts of dead pigeons' feet. Rosita Bonita founder Rowenna Harrison said: "The public side of the competition, although pretty stressful, has also been really rewarding. I've had such phenomenal support from my followers, friends, family, stockists and other designers, and have gained lots of new followers through the campaign process. "It's been a real boost. I'm so happy now to have the opportunity to show at Treasure and to reach a new audience." The competition, however, is not over just yet. Next the three winners will go on to face the judges of this year’s competition once more who will this time look for commercial savvy. The designers will be interviewed by Professional Jeweller about their business plans for the future, the interview will be presented to the judges and they will then award the brand with the most commercial potential an additional stand at trade show The Jewellery Show London, which takes place at Somerset House in June. This year the judges are Professional Jeweller editor-in-chief Rachael Taylor, Professional Jeweller deputy editor Kathryn Bishop, Treasure organiser Della Tinsley, The Jewellery Show event director Julie Driscoll, ROX managing director Kyron Keogh, Green + Benz managing director Helen Dimmick, Baroque founders Kyle McIntosh and Jason French, Steffans director Wes Suter, Marmalade Jewellers co-founder Nadine Meegan, and last year's overall competition winner Claire English.

What a great year for the hand engravers association, all highlighted in the chairmans report at the AGM this week! From apprentiship schemes, dedication to teaching and their highlight of the opportunity to share... Cut In Clerkenwell. Stage two now in full flow and growing by the day... Records of individual hand engravers across Great Britain.

The records and paperweight project will be open for the public to see At: The Clockmakers' Museum and Guildhall Library, Aldermanbury, London EC2V 7HH on the 17th April. And worth visiting more than once as it will be growing over the year!

alexandre diamond optical setting and engraving school event at goldsmiths

The first technical event at the goldsmiths centre, with a mix of visitors from traditional hand engravers, diamond and stone setters to us jewellery new and old.

The presentation started more as a sales pitch of the school and a very mini sales pitch of the grs equipment; http://www.suttontools.co.uk/power-tools/grs-stone-setting-engravin.... Then the founder of the school did a demonstration.. Alexander Sidharov played down his skills, but his precision, speed and skill shone through rapidly setting stones with cleanliness and traditional style within minutes.

Afterwards we all had the opportunity to chat with the Sutton Tools rep. .... Very very friendly and helpful and Alexander as well as catch up with the rare opportunities of chatting and having time for each other!

What a very busy event, lots of activity and materials hanging about. Smaller venue than expected, but some interesting events coming up. It's a shame it's so far from me!

Downside of the opening, the only info was on the leaflet and web, hard to get to speak to anyone because it was busy, and materials weren't labelled! But guess it was more about the make space!

Do discuss below if you went or are going soon, Grace Horne's master class looks good in the summer! And invent a material workshop... I'm intrigued!

Great to see the exhibitors at Desire this year! Thought I aught to write a little something. Feel free to comment and discuss below too, it would be great to get some views from some of you that exhibited!

It was lovely to see such a broad range of work and surprising to see such a broad range of quality too. Some of our wonderful members mixed in with some fabulous silversmithing!

Not so sure about the venue though, I didn't exhibit, but as visitor and maker I found it a bit disappointing! A little claustrophobic, particularly in the main hall, and the Saturday was a little quiet. The signage wasn't great outside and the cafe smelt a bit odd.

However it's great to see some of the old favourites exhibiting alongside some of the newer guys!

Young British Jewellers:

New online community launched to connect contemporary British jewellers and promote their work

Young British Jewellers, founded in 2012 by jeweller Vega Bantock and historian Christopher Minton, showcases contemporary British jewellery and provides an online forum for contemporary British jewellers.

The website offers free profile space for contemporary jewellers of all ages working or studying in Britain. Each new member is provided with a free personalised profile and image gallery to promote their work, along with a private messaging system to communicate with other Young British Jewellers. The site’s contemporary jewellery blog features exhibition reviews, interviews and insights into jeweller’s studios.

An Events page details current and future jewellery exhibitions taking place in Britain, enabling contemporary jewellers to find out about and attend events across the country. This solves an issue encountered by Vega Bantock during her degree at Birmingham City University: “Contemporary jewellery isn’t usually sold in shops but instead showcased in art or craft galleries, and information can be hard to find unless you know exactly where to look. The YBJ Events page will make it easier for people to find out about exhibitions, thereby boosting gallery visitor numbers.”

Explaining the pair’s motivations for establishing the site, co-founder and University of Birmingham graduate Chris Minton says, “After study, many jewellers work alone in home studios and can lack the support of a community environment. Young British Jewellers provides a solution to this problem, both online and through our exciting new events.

“In addition, we recognise that consumers often find it hard to locate well designed, unique pieces of jewellery online, as searches usually bring up the bigger, mainstream jewellery companies, while the websites of individual makers remain hidden. By bringing everyone into one place, Young British Jewellers makes it easier for jewellers to be accessed online, helping them promote themselves.”

Planned future developments for Young British Jewellers include organising networking events for jewellers to inspire the formation of collaborations and collectives, creating web pages detailing jewellery galleries in Britain and jewellery course providers, as well as establishing a series of interviews with course directors of jewellery degrees across Britain, providing insights into the future of contemporary jewellery.
