Inspirations from the Archive

Please come and join us for a private viewing of this Exhibition
on Friday 11 Jan at 6.30pm in the V&A’s Whitely Silver Gallery.

The exhibition has been curated by Ann Eatwell, the Padgett and Braham
Curator at the Archive, and the objects are the work of the 2011-12
Fellows of Bishopsland who were invited to use the archive to draw
inspiration from the large and diverse holdings at Blythe Rd.

The display shows sketches and maquettes together with the finished
pieces, revealing the process of design and giving a rare insight
from inspiration to finished work.

We hope you will join us afterwards for a drink at the Rembrandt Hotel
in Cromwell Rd, opposite the V&A Main Entrance.

The role requires a driven, self-motivated and hard working individual with a passion for arts and crafts and can do attitude.

The post holder works directly for the Gallery Director providing support with curating, hanging and preparing for exhibitions, educational events and private views. He/she is jointly in charge of the programming of four annual Craft Collections. This requires a strong understanding of art and craft in the UK and a love of visiting in art fairs and exhibitions to source new artists and makers, also outside the working hours.

The role includes a strong administrative and stock control element. The post holder ensures that both manual and computerised administration stock systems are up to date and well maintained, essential for the smooth running of the gallery. He/she also ensures that stock is stored safely when not on display, helping to maintain accurate stock records, and packing and returning unsold work by courier when required.

The post holder helps with the daily upkeep of the gallery and ensure that exhibition and craft gallery spaces are clean, up to date, welcoming and organised at all times. This also includes wrapping up and protecting stock from damage in a storage room, as well as climbing ladders to re-install pictures for exhibitions. The role is fairly physical during installations and take downs.
Person specification
The position combines a number of tasks and responsibilities, in the following broad areas:

Essential attributes:
• Commitment to the Trust's mission as an educational charity
• Minimum of 1 year of art sale/gallery experience
• Degree in art history/ fine art/crafts or a relevant field
• The ability to instantly build rapport with clients on the phone and face-to-face
• Passionate and energetic about sales and hitting gallery targets each month
• Retail/customer service experience
• Proven experience of working successfully to targets
• Flexible with hours of work
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• High attention to detail with immaculate presentation
• Full/clean UK driving licence
• Proficient IT skills
• Strong administrative and organisational skills
• Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
• Willingness of comply with internal procedures and policies, abiding by health and safety guidelines and sharing responsibility for own safety and that of colleagues.

Desirable attributes:
• Knowledge of gallery education and outreach
• Knowledge of database management and development

• Postgraduate qualification on a relevant subject
• Health and safety training relevant to gallery work
• Experience of managing a stall in art fairs.

Working hours

Minimum 24 hours weekly. The gallery is open from 10am to 5pm from Tuesday to Saturday - staff is required to be on site for the minimum of 9.45am to 5.15pm. In addition, the post holder is expected to attend private views, special events and installations in the gallery and external venues and to work additional hours as required for installations, stock room maintenance and visits to fairs and exhibitions. The annual leave is 16.8 days.

Throughout 2013 Craft Scotland will be planning and hosting our largest programme of events for the craft sector to date.

Our plans include a conference, networking events, training and coaching on essential areas of audience development including marketing, building a brand and reaching out to your own communities.

The Craft Bench will be a committee of twelve people who will be asked to come together twice a year to share their opinions, thoughts and ideas with Craft Scotland on how to make Scotland the strongest craft community in the world.

Through prior consultation with makers we know that there are a variety of essential training issues that will always be required. However, sometimes one size doesn’t fit all. The audience development needs of furniture makers are different from those of textile designers, and Scottish potters enjoy different opportunities and issues to those of jewellers working in Scotland.

With this in mind, we have invited a representative from six leading Scottish craft associations and societies to join the Craft Bench as founder members, covering jewellery, basketmaking, furniture, glass, ceramics and textiles.

A new report released on Friday by the Silver Institute paints a rosy picture of the Chinese silver market and forecasts further growth. In just a decade, demand for silver in China has grown by more than 100 million ounces and fabrication has nearly doubled, making China the second largest silver fabricator in the world just behind India. China is the world’s leading market for both physical investment and paper trading of silver futures.

Thai jewelry designer joins forces with Belgian fashion house
Capara to create prize-winning collection
Mill Valley, CA, December 11, 2012, Art Jewelry Forum---The top American prize for an emerging art jeweler has been awarded to Noon Passama Sanpatchayapong, a Thai designer currently studying in The Netherlands. In recognition of her originality, depth of concept, and quality of craftsmanship, Passama will be receiving a cash award of $7500 US from the Art Jewelry Forum and will be exhibited by Gallerie Ra at the 2013 Collect art fair in London.


The winning collection is a rare collaboration between an art jeweler and fashion designers. NoonPassama partnered with Capara, an Antwerp-based clothing line founded by sisters Vera and Olivera Capara. The Capara product is presented through video, photographs, or installation during women's fashion week in Paris. The Capara sisters collaborate with different artists to add other objects, such as furniture and art, to their clothing collections. The necklaces Noon Passama submitted to AJF were part of Capara's Spring/Summer 2012 Collection Favorite Dreams.

Noon Passama's jewelry attracts worldwide attention. It has been exhibited in Amsterdam, Bangkok, Florence, London, Melbourne, Munich, Paris, Seoul, and Zurich and featured in major fashion magazines, such as Blend, Dazed and Confused (Japan), Items, L'Official Homme (China), Surface, Vogue (Italy and Turkey), Vogue Gioiello, Wallpaper, and Zoo. Music artist Rihanna wore a Passama necklace in the music video for Te Amo. Still less than 30 years old, Passama traverses the worlds of art jewelry and fashion with ease. The AJF award celebrates her achievement, her talent, and her promise.


"The chain is the classic backbone of the jewelry field," says AJF Emerging Artist Award juror Marjan Unger. "Everything that matters in a good chain lies in one element and the way it links with its neighbors. The series of chains Noon Passama developed is beautiful in its basic shapes and its proportions. It is a brave subject to choose. It takes a very good artist to reach this level of expression within all the limits of a chain, and to add something worthwhile to a very long history."

Jurors for the 2012 AJF Emerging Artist Award were: Kelly L'Ecuyer, Ellyn McColgan Curator of Decorative Arts and Sculpture, Art of the Americas, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts; Marjan Unger, Dutch collector, curator, professor, and writer; and Farrah Al Dujaili, studio jeweler and 2012 AJF's Emerging Artist Award winner. A small reminder before Christmas…
Goldsmiths’ Company Pavilion 2013 at Somerset House is open for entries.

The Goldsmiths’ Company has initiated an enlarged Goldsmiths’ Company Pavilion, 26-29 June 2013, a selling exhibition for jewellers and silversmiths at Somerset House to build on the success of last year’s inaugural event.
 
To be eligible, applicants must be UK residents and all the work must be made in the UK.  In addition, work must be designed and made by the applicant themselves and include precious metal(s).

The Craft Skills Awards acknowledge excellence in teaching, maintaining and developing craft skills.

Applications are now open until 15 February 2013. Individuals, companies, groups and organisations can apply or be nominated. The prize for each award is £2,500 which will be presented at an awards ceremony in May.

There are four categories:

• Award for encouraging craft skills in the workplace
• Award for encouraging craft skills in an educational setting
• Award for encouraging craft skills in other settings
• Award for engaging new and diverse audiences in craft skills

Applications can be completed online, or by post and any age or sub-sector of craft may apply.

ACJ Magazine Findings needs an Editor!
Muriel Wilson has edited Findings since ACJ was set up in 1997, but feels now that it's time to hand over to a younger, fresher mind with a stronger grasp of the potential of new technological possibilities.
ACJ is now seeking a suitable editor or editorial panel to continue Muriel's good work. The post is concerned with the management of a production schedule of feature articles, reports and reviews of exhibitions and books, rather than with writing contributions for the magazine, and needs someone with experience of commissioning material and working with a designer and printer. Much of the work is normally concentrated into 2 intensive periods during the year (March-April and August- September), but necessitates an awareness of possible subjects for material throughout the year. If you feel that you have suitable experience, please contact enquiries@acj.org.uk with details. The post has been unpaid (although expenses can be claimed), but ACJ's plans for fundraising for this and other activities may mean that some remuneration will be
available.
