is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

Art Jewelry Forum can turn mute material into something meaningful and significant. Every art jewel has a personal story (like a pearl is the oyster's autobiography!), and AJF can unfold these stories.

Grayson Perry: Playing to the Gallery: 2013 Episode 2 of 4
Duration: 42 minutes
First broadcast: Tuesday 22 October 2013
The award-winning artist Grayson Perry asks whether it is really true that anything can be art. We live in an age when many contemporary artists follow the example of Marcel Duchamp, who famously declared that a urinal was a work of art. It sometimes seems that anything qualifies, from a pile of sweets on a gallery floor to an Oscar-winning actress asleep in a box. How does the ordinary art lover decide?
In a lecture delivered amidst the Victorian splendour of St. George's Hall in Liverpool, Perry analyses with characteristic wit the common tests - from commercial worth to public popularity to aesthetic value. He admits the inadequacies of such yardsticks, especially when applied to much conceptual and performance art. And he concludes that in his opinion, the quality most valued in the art world is seriousness.

Featured Maker - November 2013
http://www.craftinfocus.com/focus_november_2013.html

Each month we will be turning the spotlight on one of our regular makers,to give you an insight into their work, and to direct you to more information about them.

Mary-Jane Sirett - Mary Mary Jewellery

Mary has been making her unique and quirky range of jewellery for about 25 years now. She uses a wide range of polymer clays combined with her huge semi-precious gemstone collection, precious metals and bohemian crystals to create her much sought after, highly colourful and very intricate pieces of work. Mary builds highly detailed 'canes' of pattern with the clay - which she then cuts into tiny slices to build each one-off piece. Her techniques and skills are quite unusual and thus her work has appeared in several books and a number of magazines over the years, as well as being stocked by some of the London's most prestigious galleries.

Now living in the far west of Cornwall, Mary's mad cap life is packed with wild and wonderful adventures and her jewellery is built to withstand this intense wear and tear! The most important aspect or her work though is that it is beautiful, flattering, comfortable and of the highest possible quality for the wearer. Affordability and happy customers are also high on the agenda - hence her big emphasis on any aftercare and a lifetime guarantee on much of her work. Mary really treasures the lovely comments and gratitude so many of her regular customers bestow on her - "It's what makes it all worthwhile at the end of the day."

Surrounded by the most incredible, ever changing Atlantic scenery, and living close to St Ives with its huge artistic heritage, Mary never runs out of inspiration, and delights in forever creating new designs. These can be seen at the prestigious craft shows she attends, in the ever growing number of galleries who stock her work, and in her studio at Foundry Farm, Hayle.

As a testament to the strength of her jewellery Mary is very proud to have been ranked 53rd in the recent World Bellyboarding Championships at Chapel Porth, Cornwall dressed in vintage costume and, of course, wearing her jewels. The training involves a daily session of playing in the waves with her friends, for which she would never consider removing her jewellery. So far - so good, despite the recent fabulous surf in which the mighty waves managed to break her board in two!

Mary is delighted to be taking part in Craft In Focus events at Sevenoaks, Winchester and Wisley in November.

Further information and images can be see on Mary's website:
