Anyone: In June 2012 TROVE, with Antonio Roberts, are hosting an exhibition about toys. TROVE are looking for toys, as is the current understanding of the word, that have been altered, hacked, modified or electronically changed. Notes for application: - please make sure you can deliver and collect your toys from TROVE; 11th/12th June for drop off and 24th June for collection. - we will only be accepting applications where toys are battery powered

This month seems to be about sad news for the metal clay community. Read on.

Aida have announced a rather large price increase in their Art Clay Silver products. As of the 1st of June there will be an increase in price of approximately 30%. One of the UK distributors Metal Clay Limited has released a statement which goes some way to explain Aida's decision;
"Change in Art Clay pricing - Aida has managed to keep the prices of metal clay as low as possible for a long time but, due to the historical high rate of the Japanese Yen appreciation against the US Dollar and Euro since last year, combined with the continuous high price of gold and silver and increases in manufacturing costs in Japan, they now need to be more realistic with how they price their products, in order to keep manufacturing and supplying us" For the full statement about the Art Clay price rise, click here.

Anna Campbell has helpfully compiled a table for UK suppliers and their current prices, which will be subject to change once the price hike comes into force. Check it out Anna Campbell's blog post about the Art Clay price increase here.

Art Clay World have just announced that they won't be running the biannual conference in 2013. They are calling on the metal clay manufacturers to get together and organise a conference for the community or for some other entity to take this on. New York—When the 15th edition of the Sculpture Objects & Functional Art Fair (SOFA NEW YORK) opens on Friday, April 20 at the Park Avenue Armory, it will do what it has always had done best—spur visitors to wrestle with the topic: What is art? As always, attendees will be drawn to a thrilling collection of masterworks representing the gamut of contemporary art and design from around the world. Upon entering the exhibition hall, fairgoers will be instantly transported into a celestial mise-en-scene created by architect David Ling.  AISLE 200: At Ornamentum, from Hudson, NY, Stefan Friedmann presents David Clarke, one of Britain’s most highly innovative silversmiths, who whimsically subverts entrenched silversmithing and metalsmith traditions, often taking them to surprising extremes. In 2010, Clarke was awarded the UK’s prestigious Jerwood Contemporary Makers Award (Booth 209).     Rob and Jaap Thalen Thalen & Thalen     Sowon Joo Snyderman-Works Gallery Carrying on a rich tradition of Belgian silversmithing areThalen and Thalen, a father and son team from Francorchamps. Rob Thalen invites collectors and savvy investors alike to “enjoy the touch, the light reflecting in this precious material, and the sheer being of (our) objects.” (Booth 310). Earning his stripes as principal team member with the likes of Lino Tagliapietra and Dale Chihuly, John Kiley’s glass sculpture at Schantz Galleries, Stockbridge, MA, explores internal and external form, expressing the shifting relationship between shape, light and color (Booth 311). The Philadelphia-based Snyderman-Works Galleriespresents poetic Korean artist/jeweler Sowon Joo, who calls her work “fairytales for grown-ups.” Inspired by nature’s order and harmony, Joo richly references its interconnectedness in her design and materials (Booth 318).

Assemble 2012 Mark your calendar for Assemble 2012 - the Crafts Council Conference on Thursday 20 September at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), London.  This year, the overarching theme for Assemble is the contribution craft makes to innovation and enterprise, and the relationship between making and science, technology and engineering.  Keynote speakers include Ed Vaizey MP, Minister for Culture, Communications and the Creative Industries and during the day there will be panel discussions, activities and ample opportunity for networking and making new contacts. Join us for a stimulating day during the London Design Festival.  We'll be announcing further speakers, how to book tickets and more information shortly. In the meantime, find out more about other Crafts Council projects on our website.  Assemble 2012 is presented by the Crafts Council in partnership with Watershed and Makers' Guild.
