last day today The Design and Craft Fair
22nd - 25th October, 2015

MADE LONDON is fast becoming one of the top selling events for designer makers in Europe. We aim to present an enjoyable fair, showcasing the very best and most original makers in this country and beyond, exhibiting and selling their highest quality designs direct to the public. Visitors to MADE LONDON are always impressed by the variety, quality and originality of the craft and design on show; and love exploring each of the four levels of the dramatic and beautiful building. MADE LONDON is in particular a relaxed and friendly event with a lovely laid back atmosphere.

The Venue
MADE LONDON takes place at One Marylebone, a stunning Sir John Soane Church in central London. Directly opposite Great Portland Street tube station and next door to Regents Park, the building is unique in that each level has it's own particular feel. The moody and atmospheric crypt, the majestic Soane Hall and the light filled gallery spaces all add to the uniqueness of this show. A cafe serving drinks and light meals is situated in the double height crypt.

Kawaii as a Button! Cuteness in Contemporary Craft Practice (30 October 2015, from 6:30pm - The Small Hall, Kensington Conference Centre)

Kawaii, in simple terms, is a Japanese concept denoting a quality of cuteness. Its signature vibrant colour pallet and infantilised characterisation can be found almost everywhere and has arguably become synonymous with contemporary Japanese culture. Ubiquitous worldwide in haute couture, anime, manga, and even applied in fine art practice, kawaii has an ever-increasing influence across all creative industries. Yet, how do contemporary Japanese artists working with concepts of craft - normally regarded on the opposite end of the spectrum of cute as they are quite often associated with traditional skills and ideas - perceive and respond to this global phenomenon?

In this special talk hosted by the Japan Foundation, Japanese practitioners who use media and techniques close to craft production will challenge the standard concept of cute. Through presentation and discussion with Professor Simon Olding, Director of Crafts Study Centre, the artists will explore how their artisan pieces are influenced by kawaii culture including expressing their views towards the complex notion. They will also examine their expertise from both an ideological and practical basis, as well as consider how their handmade creations push the boundaries and elevate traditional Japanese craftsmanship and skills, blurring the line between visual art and craft utilitarian objects.

Participating artists:

Gendai Bijutsu Nitouhei is a two-man art unit made up of Shane Kagotani and Katsuhito Fujiwara. Their work features a variety of paintings, sculptures, and mixed media pieces that they call "da-bijutsu" (cheap art), and often is made up to look like candy, or something similarly commonplace.

Minako Nishiyama started her artistic career with a group of works which dealt with social implications in "pink" and "Kawaii (cute)" in Japan. Using mixed media, her work has also close connotations with Japanese concepts like otaku and maid cafes.

Mitsuo Toyazaki is a textile artist who is interested in finding the beauty and humour in the mundane and ordinary. With a passion for colour, he has previously produced installations using everyday objects such as buttons or safety pins to create patterns and motifs across the space.

This event is free to attend but booking is essential. To reserve a place, please email your name and the title of the event you would like to attend to event@jpf.org.uk

The exhibition Kawaii: crafting the Japanese culture of cute, curated by Professor Lesley Millar, will be held at James Hockey & Foyer Galleries, University for the Creative Arts (UCA), Farnham from 30 October to 12 December 2015, supported by the Japan Foundation. The Renwick Gallery is home to the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s collection of contemporary craft and decorative art, one of the finest and most extensive collections of its kind. The museum’s home is a National Historic Landmark, the first built expressly as an art museum in the United States, and is named in honor of its architect, James Renwick, Jr. It has been a branch of the Smithsonian since 1972. The Renwick exhibits the most exciting works by artists exploring traditional and innovative approaches to making, emphasizing craft as an approach to living differently in the modern world. Collections, special exhibitions, and scholarship highlight how extraordinary handmade objects have shaped the American experience and continue to impact our lives.

The Renwick Gallery reopens to the public on Friday, November 13 following a major two-year renovation. A opening exhibition titled WONDER, featuring nine major contemporary artists, a celebratory weekend of public programs, and three special publications will accompany the reopening.
