The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

Jose Marin : Primavera

March 25, 2017 – April 29, 2017
http://www.mobilia-gallery.com/
When anodized, Titanium is the most jewel-like metal with it’s glowing spectrum of colors shifting in the light. It is also one of the most challenging materials to smith, but Jose Marin makes the challenge look effortless with these new works. He incorporates precious and semi-precious stones set in the Titanium and chooses forms inspired by plant and marine life that shimmer with every movement.

“When I choose a material, it is always with the idea of transforming it into a magical object. At this time I have opted for Titanium, a unique metal. Its hardness and toughness brings the challenge of making jewels by hand. Inspired by botanicals, and combining Titanium with gold, silver and semi-precious stones, I enjoy exploring new directions for contemporary jewelry with all the colors that nature provides.”

The majority of Four’s artists would probably say that the hands are their most important tools, but in Benjamin Lignel’s case the head plays a more prominent role. With an intermittently sharp, but often also affectionate humour, Lignel comments on appearance, body image, jewellery and what it symbolizes. Since 2013 Benjamin Lignel is the editor of Art Jewelry Forum and he is well known on the contemporary jewellery scene both as artist, curator and writer. The exhibition at Four will show a retrospective over his 10year career.

Electricity: The spark of life

UNTIL 25 JUN
FREE | DROP IN

From the first breaths of Frankenstein's monster to the brutal simplicity of the execution chair, this exhibition contemplates the contradictory life-giving and death-dealing extremes generated by electricity, and traces the story of how humanity has striven to understand, unlock and gain control over this invisible and yet all-encompassing force, which continues to mystify and amaze.

'Electricity: The spark of life' is a collaboration between Wellcome Collection, the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester and the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, the Netherlands. It will tour all three venues, starting at Wellcome Collection.

One of the commissioned works in 'Electricity' contains strobe effects. The rest of the exhibition can be visited without entering the installation. Please contact us if you would like to know more.

The book 'A Practical Course in Personal Magnetism' accompanies the exhibition.  https://wellcomecollection.org/electricity?utm_campaign=713347_FP%2...

New measures announced in the budget are likely to impact on craft businesses and education:

Budget

New measures announced in the budget are likely to impact on craft businesses and education:

  • New T-Levels qualifications are intended to give parity of esteem for technical education. We will be following the development closely to understand if they offer opportunities to diversify routes into craft careers.
  • will be made available to assist firms affected by increases in business rates, including a discretionary hardship fund for local authorities to help businesses most affected by the revaluation.

Our budget briefing gives more details.
