The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

We’re contacting you from the Goldsmiths’ Centre in Clerkenwell, London, to make you aware of our free business taster programme, Getting Started, which runs from Monday 9 to Friday 13 January 2017.

Getting Started is open to recent graduates (completed in the past 5 years) from UK certified jewellery, silversmithing and metalwork or related courses and is supported by the Goldsmiths’ Company. Every workshop is designed to help them to get to grips with the practicalities of setting up in business.

We are now seeking new talent who has real potential to succeed in business and who will benefit from learning about topics such as selling work to galleries, developing social media presence and portfolios, understanding pricing and the art of networking. As part of the week, leading industry experts will give the graduates the benefits of their experience with past speakers including Stephen Webster, Nan Nan Liu, Leo deVroomen, Liz Olver and Tomasz Donocik.

This year successful applicants will also have the unique opportunity to showcase their work at the Goldsmiths’ Centre from November to early January as well as meeting other new graduates, business experts and industry members at an exclusive industry reception.

If you know a student would like to apply for a place on Getting Started, please ask them to do this before Friday 7 October 2016. They can find our useful Getting Started Guide 2017 as well as application forms on our website at www.goldsmiths-centre.org/professional-training/short-and-part-time... We have also attached a picture and suggested social media posts for you to send out to your alumni groups via your social media channels.

Please do let your alumni know about Getting Started and we look forward to receiving their applications! Thank you very much for your support.

Demitra Thomloudis and Motoko Furuhashi: CrossPass
http://www.velvetdavinci.com/2016/08/demitra-thomloudis-and-motoko-...

Artists’ Reception: Friday, September 9, 6-8pm

CrossPass is a project featuring collaborative and solo works by artists Demitra Thomloudis and Motoko Furuhashi that examines place through expanded media and the intimate lens of jewelry and small objects. The project targets a distinctive stretch of the Interstate 10 corridor connecting the unique borderplex region of El Paso, Texas to Las Cruces, New Mexico. The objective of CrossPass is to allow site-specific locations and the artists’ shared personal inquiries along this route to initiate the collection of images, video and sound which directly influences the creation of jewelry and objects. The viewer is asked to join them in their investigation of this land awash with dramatic terrain, vernacular structures and a multitude of boundaries; and, to uniquely discover these sites through the body.

https://ccskills.org.uk/careers/advice/article/stone-cutter-lapidar...
Stone cutters often specialise in coloured gemstones. These could be anything from emeralds, sapphires and rubies to amethyst, rock crystal and black onyx. These stones are then used to make jewellery or decorative objects.

As well as cutting stones for new pieces of jewellery, lapidaries also repair and re-polish jewellery stones, often from antique pieces. They may also repair the stones in other antiques, such as stone-inlaid clocks, urns and goblets.
What is the job like?

As a lapidary, your job would involve:

using a magnifying lens to examine the stone for fissures, holes and cracks
cutting the stone into the required shape, such as a block, or slicing it using various saws and grinders with diamond-blade edges. The diamond may be applied manually, or the machine may have an electro-plated diamond-blade edge
using a faceting machine to cut the stone at certain angles so that it catches the light
drilling holes in specific places
using hand and machine tools to sand the gem in several stages to produce a very fine surface
using different types of polishing equipment to finish the stone.

You would need a detailed understanding of the different types of gems and their properties, such as the various grains, to enable you to cut the stones properly. Stones vary in their hardness and heat sensitivity, and some are more prone to breaks or cracks.

Some lapidaries are employed in jewellery workshops, whilst others are self-employed and make bespoke jewellery for clients.
How do I become a lapidary?

Crafthaus Project Grant - Entry Deadline: Sep 30, 2016
Every other year, crafthaus awards a micro grant to a craft artist regardless of their location, professional background, or chosen craft field. The grant is unrestricted and intended to provide assistance for an interesting new personal or group project.

Since 2011, crafthaus supported diverse projects such as a women-led craft cooperative in Southeastern Turkey and an international group exhibition for artists with invisible disabilities.

Projects proposals are published on crafthaus without revealing personal information about the submitting party (no names, bios, credentials.) Every project is presented on its own merit. The public is invited to vote on the best idea. Students, established artists, academics, outsiders - every project is considered equally.
