The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

Are you planning to attend Collective Design Fair in New York? Then you can join AJF's trip and participate in curator-led tours and conversations with select artists from May 5-6, 2016.

Included in the trip is attendance to an invitation-only panel on collecting hosted by Norwegian Craft with Glenn Adamson and Lindsay Pollock, a curator-led tour of Bent, Cast & Forged: The Jewelry of Harry Bertoia at the Museum of Arts and Design, a visit to Collective Design with a focus on the two dedicated jewelry galleries included in the fair: Sienna Patti, featuring the work of Jamie Bennett, and Ornamentum Gallery, who will be featuring Jiro Kimata--and that's just the first day. On the second day, visit Gallery Loupe and meet Israeli artist Esther Knobel, Brooklyn Metalworks to view Alissa Lamarre's Dividing Gravity, and the Gallery at Reinstein|Ross to celebrate with Donald Friedlich. You will also receive passes to attend the Armory Show on your own time, thanks to the generosity of Didier, Ltd. To attend this trip, you must be a current supporter of AJF. Rachel McKnight is a Belfast-based jewellery maker. She discusses the challenges of striking out on your own, and offers advice for makers just starting out.
From graduation to craft work

"Be realistic with what you can do with time management, things like that. And apply for lots of funding."

"I graduated in 2003. For it, I'd done a series of 20 bangles. They weren't commercial in any way at all. They were more large-scale, you couldn't really wear them every day. So once I graduated, I was: 'What do I do now?'

"I got to work. I got some very basic machinery and I was cutting everything by hand. Iit was a very basic studio I'd set up.

"But the idea was: 'OK, I'm just going to put together a range of jewellery'. I actually only had maybe six or eight pieces. I went through the Yellow Pages to find shops, and that was tricky enough in itself, because I didn't know what the shops were like. I didn't know what kind of work they were having or how they would respond to the jewellery I was making."
Making a craft business

"Once the first order was in, I applied to a couple of craft fairs. The first one was St George's Market in Belfast, and that was a huge thing for me because it was about making stock and making sure I had enough stock.

"In the end I actually made too much. I sold more pieces than I thought, but I had still made enough stock to do me for maybe a few years. So I sold more and I was absolutely overwhelmed, but the best part was getting feedback from the customers. That was the main thing for me.

"The next turning point was Craft NI's 'Making It' course, so it was like a business development programme. Basically I'm working on my own, I do all my own accounts, I've got to sell as well. So I'm trying to get the balance right between making products, getting the ac...

ACJ Members ACJ Conference and Exhibition - 2017
In 2017 the Association will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in style! Our annual members’ exhibition will be especially grand and shown across the country at a number of venues over the year. We are also staging a conference, to be held in Hull (UK City of Culture 2017) over the weekend of 7th – 9th July. The conference and the exhibition will both share the thematic title 20:20 Visions.
Planning is fairly advanced for both events though we are seeking advice from you, the members, to help confirm suggestions for the conference. We aim to provide an inclusive and participatory event, which can be informative, stimulating, encourage development of contacts, and ...fun!
We hope the few questions below are a relatively quick and simple means of receiving your views. The conference is for your benefit so we really do need your input! We'd appreciate comments by 12th April.
This survey will not take more than a few minutes. Here's the link:
