The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

Harriet Kelsall's reply:

There are all sorts of different ways to learn whilst being paid and all sorts of useful courses. You can do anything if you want to enough – you just have to find a way. Here are a couple of ideas to get you thinking...

You could work full time in the jewellery field in order to get relevant experience whilst studying in the evenings. For example you could work in a jewellery shop or helping set up a show like IJL, or working in an administrational or operational role at a local jewellery company. You will learn loads in any of these fields which will be relevant to you as a goldsmith later. And whilst you work there, study a local evening course in silversmithing and jewellery making to make a start on your bench skills and see where that takes you.

You could consider an apprenticeship. You co... ...

Good luck – I’m sure you will find a way to get the skills you need in a way which suits you.

States of Mind: Tracing the edges of consciousness

UNTIL 16 OCTOBER
FREE | DROP IN

This evolving exhibition will examine perspectives from artists, psychologists, philosophers and neuroscientists to interrogate our understanding of the conscious experience.

Exploring phenomena such as somnambulism, mesmerism, and disorders of memory and consciousness, the exhibition examines ideas about the nature of consciousness, and in particular what can happen when our typical conscious experience is interrupted, damaged or undermined.

States of Mind: Tracing the edges of consciousness features a series of changing installations. The first is The Whisper Heard by Imogen Stidworthy, until 24 April. On 26 April, this will be replaced by H.M. by Kerry Tribe. Find out more about the installations.

All our exhibitions are free. Find out about entry at busy times.

Intro
The 25th Legnica internationl jewellery competition in the framework of Legnica Jewellery Festival Silver 2016 is open for submissions. This years topic is "City".

A city is one of the grandest, oldest and longest lasting achievements of human civilisation. Is it also the last? How great is the cities power of attraction if according to the sociological and demographic prognoses they will soon house over 80% of humanity? This tendency is ever increasing. What are these civilisation’s creatures, these (monstro)cities? What is the nature of their phenomenon?

A city is an autotelic structure, territorial-urban and social, an intellectual concept which lives its own live, but, at the same time, a creation as exact, practical and self-sufficient as any natural ecosystem. According to many, a city is defined by its residents and so it holds together all the man’s virtues and flaws. It is then an emanation of ambivalence and contradictions: good and evil, freedom and oppression, order and chaos, calculation and passion, power and weakness, beauty and ugliness, rationalism and spontaneity, community and egoism, safety and invigilation, riches and poverty, creativity and consumption, love and hate, comfort and burden, an individual and a crowd, etc.

A city is an element of controversial beauty and narcotic effects. The opposite of indolent peace and morbid boredom. A synonymous of haste and superficiality, countless impressions and illusions of a better life. A sum of its inhabitants’ individual thoughts, passions and desires, locked up in a reusable Pandora’s Box. A City - Mecca, El Dorado and Mordor in one. Man’s Heaven and Hell.

Date and Place of the exhibition: 26th April - 5th June 2016
Opening ceremony: 21st May 2016 Exhibition space: The Gallery of Art in Legnica, Plac Katedralny 1

The Organizers plan to present the exhibition in chosen cities in Poland and abroad.
