Smart materials for smart products

I see that the Fraunhofer Institutes are getting some press coverage on their ability to develop new materials for new electronic applications. The interesting thing about this is that some are smart materials, some that haven’t seen much in the way of articles lately.

Electrochromic materials respond to light to generate power or indeed can generate light when powered. Fraunhofer have been looking at electrochromic films for shading in windows and talking about the challenge of developing the colour range and the breadth of response.

There’s also mention of new elastomer actuators for invisible switches for consumer, automotive and industrial electronics combining elastomers with piezoelectric thin film sensors.

Both these smart technologies – electrochromic and piezoelectric - are covered in the Smart Design Guide and we’re looking for feedback from the smart materials community on the accuracy of these outlines so if you want to see something added or changed then contact Steve Morris.

Who we’re looking for:
The British Council and Anou are launching an open call seeking 3 UK-based design and craft practitioners for the second round of the Common Thread residencies. The residencies will take place over a period of 3 weeks in August, when the residents will live in the High Atlas Mountains with artisans who are part of the Moroccan e-commerce artisan-led platform Anou. Residents and artisans will lead workshops and share their practices with each other in this exciting opportunity.

This residency is for UK-based practitioners. Applicants from design and craft backgrounds are preferred, though applications from other practitioners will be considered. Residents will be given the opportunity to learn from artisans working across weaving, leather, jewellery, woodwork, ceramics and metalwork. We’d be open to applications from recent graduates as well as established practitioners.

GLASS ART SOCIETY NOW ACCEPTING 2015 TAG GRANT APPLICATIONS

Anna Mlasowsky TAG Grant

Technology Advancing Glass (TAG) provides an annual research grant to an artist or group of artists exploring new materials, techniques, making methods, or applications of technology that will generally advance the field of art made with glass. Last year we received 38 unique and innovative proposals for the first-ever TAG Grant. The committee is looking forward to seeing what this year’s applicants will bring to the table!

Project proposals are open for ideas such as: new materials, production techniques, safe shipping techniques, new tools, adhesives, ways to create glass sculpture animated with electronics… and beyond. Proposals are limited only by the imagination of our artists.

Peel Jones Copper Products produces copper castings between 100Kg and 1400Kgs in pure copper.
An opportunity exists to gain practical hands on experience in the moulding and casting areas of the business.

Experience in a casting process will be beneficial.

The training contract will be between 2 and 6 months depending on student availability, with view to employment if you are interested.

Wearables for the home

Crossing the borders of their fields, the creators offer themselves a new space for reflection, favorable to the blossoming of it and our own blossoming.

Indeed, many of the selected items in the work of 11 creators somewhat transgress the functions and uses normally given to a jewel, go beyond the existing framework of the body to get into our habitat.

As the word ´home` in the exhibition evokes, these creations are designed to take place in our interior. If due to their scale, come of the jewels/objects lose their ´wearable` nature, nonetheless their very fabric is intimately related to the body, due to the process of creation or to their workmanship.
