The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

'Getting Started' 2014 at the Goldsmiths’ Centre (13 –15 Jan), a chance to see the work of some of this year’s graduate talent who are attending the Getting Started Business Course at the Centre this year.
The Trial of the Pyx
On 4th February, Goldsmiths’ Hall hosts the Opening Trial of the Pyx. This judicial procedure, which dates back to the 13th Century, checks that UK coins produced at the Royal Mint meet statutory limits for metallic composition, weight and size. Sadly, access is strictly limited and there are no spaces remaining to view this year's Trial.
The Goldsmiths' Craftsmanship & Design Awards
'The Goldsmiths’ Craftsmanship & Design Awards 2014 Winners Exhibition' at Goldsmiths’ Hall (4 – 7 March) is the culmination of theGoldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council’s annual competition, celebrating the breadth and depth of skills and achievements of our Craft and Industry. The work of prize winners is shown alongside that of selected entrants to showcase diverse techniques and inspirational design. Admission: Free
Studio Silver Today

'Studio Silver Today' at Belton House in Lincolnshire (8 March – 1 November 2014) sees a National Trust treasure become a studio and muse for the exceptional contemporary silversmith, Angela Cork. See the artist-maker at work (most Saturdays), a display of her major recent works and enter a prize draw to win a masterpiece inspired by Belton House. 17th-Century Goldsmiths Symposium
On 25 April (10:30am – 4 pm), 'Goldsmiths in Early 17-Century London', a symposium at Goldsmiths' Hall, will explore current research on goldsmiths in the early 1600s, including insights from the Company’s own records. Marking the close of the Museum of London’s exhibition, The Cheapside Hoard, six knowledgeable speakers will discuss diverse aspects of the goldsmiths’ trade and its wider cultural influence at this time. Company Library Inspires Debut Novel
Sophia Tobin, the Goldsmiths’ Company’s Library Administrator, is about to publish her hotly anticipated debut novel entitled The Silversmith’s Wife. Sophia’s rich and intricate story of murder, love and buried secrets – set in late 18th-Century London – hits the shelves on 16th January. Both Goldsmiths’ Hall and the Assay Office feature in the book.

Revere Academy Seeks Receptionist/Student Liaison

We are seeking a full-time Receptionist/Student Liaison to join our team and perform a wide range of tasks. The Academy is looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated person for this opening. Because of your personal experience here, you understand and appreciate the Academy's culture, what we offer, and what has made this small school so special for 34 years!

The right candidate should be organized and outgoing, with good sales, customer service, office, and computer skills as well as the willingness to help out as needed. As you know, we have a small staff, and we all pitch in to do whatever needs to be done, including rolling up our sleeves and getting dirty sometimes. Familiarity with Microsoft Office, social media websites, and Adobe Creative Suite are a plus. The Revere Academy Receptionist/Student Liaison will gain valuable hands-on experience, while working closely with the Revere team.

Duties include: reception, telephone response, office and computer tasks, class preparation, facilitating student tool orders, administrating student scholarships, maintaining current mailing lists and preparing bulk mailings, working on special projects, and lots more. A major part of the job is helping prospective students learn about our programs, in person as well as by phone and correspondence.

Benefits include: medical and dental benefits after 3 months, up to six Revere Academy classes per year as part of on-the-job training, unlimited studio access when classes are not in session, a discount at Revere and Otto Frei, and the opportunity to be at the center of the contemporary jewelry world with access to valuable information, resources, and personal contacts.

Compensation D.O.E. Starting salary from $11-$14/hour with a raise after a three-month trial period.

We're excited to be opening our doors to two incredibly talented makers who both happen to live and create in Southsea. On Saturday 15 February we will be running two workshops which focus on our Spring themed brochure.

The wonderful Georgina Giles will be teaching two traditional textile crafts which encourage you to make use of your stash of unwanted fabric and clothes. The perfect chance for an early spring clean, Georgina will demonstrate how to create rag rugs and also how to create a decorative ruffle ball garland. You can then enjoy the rest of the day creating some wonderful, colourful and creative home decor items.

Next door the talented Laura Bennett will be leading a silver jewellery workshop entitled 'Forage and Form'. Using nature as an inspiration starting point, Laura will lead you through the design and making process to create your very own silver band ring or bangle. Both courses cost just £48.

Following on from the success of our 2013 poetry themed exhibition, we're delighted to be running again this year a poetry inspired exhibition to coincide World Book Night.
Once again, a self-published book will accompany the exhibition with poems illustrated by selected work.

See last year's book.

We're inviting entries in any media, including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, textiles, glass, ceramics, wood, metal, jewellery, etc.

You can choose any poem that inspires you, as long as it is out of copyright (if the poet died more than 70 years ago), or you have obtained copyright permission, or you can use your own poetry. Here's a list of some suggested classic poems that are out of copyright, so fine to use (but we'd rather you chose your own, as many of these featured last year, and we'd rather have different poems this year please!). So if you have a particular favourite poet that is not on the list, check the WATCH database to find out if they are out of copyright.

The entry deadline is February 5th.

The gallery commission is 45% on sales of original art and 50% on sales of reproduction prints & cards.

All work must be for sale and the artist must be based in the UK.

The entry deadline for applying to be World Book Night giver is very soon - 23rd Jan - so PLEASE apply quickly - see the World Book Night site for full details.
