Badges & Buttons Waistcoats & Vests

Artist Reception Friday, July 13 from 6 to 8 pm

Most of us have at one time or another worn a badge or button. It might have been a Peace Symbol, a Girl Scout pin or badge from your favorite sports team. These are pins with a purpose. They express your political views, belonging to a particular group or just saying "this is who I am". Badges can indicate some feat of service, a special accomplishment or a symbol of authority, such as a policeman's badge. Badges & Buttons Waistcoats & Vests is an exhibition exploring the notion of this modest form of jewelry. Curators Elizabeth Turrell (UK) & Robert Ebendorf (USA) have asked 26 artists, mostly from the United Kingdom and the US, to come up with their own kind of button with a message. The artist badges are displayed on vests or waistcoats – vintage, altered or custom-made clothing puts the jewelry on an imagined wearer.

Gallery Volunteer, New Ashgate Gallery, Farnham

1-2 days a week

 

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our dynamic gallery team. We are looking for two volunteers to gain experience of multiple aspects of exhibitions work. There will be an opportunity to gain experience of the following tasks:

• Administration 
• Archiving
• Marketing
• Installing and dismounting exhibitions
• Researching exhibitions
• Supporting gallery education
• Supporting artists
• Engaging with gallery audience

 

THE NEW ASHGATE GALLERY TRUST is dedicated to promoting and selling contemporary art and craft. We are a non-profit making organisation and rely on sales from our exhibitions and donations from our clients to further our charitable aims that can be found at: www.newashgate.org.uk

As an educational charity, we promote contemporary visual arts and crafts to as wide a public as possible, through a programme of changing exhibitions, projects with artists, makers, projects of support and development delivered by the trust with local, regional and national partnerships and educational events. We deliver educational events including artist's workshops, professional practice seminars and school visits.

 

Personnel specification:

An enthusiastic and polite "can-do" attitude, basic research skills, ability to work on own initiative and IT skills are essential. The position includes occasional weekend and evening work during special events. Previous experience of exhibitions’ work is desirable. Also, if you have any special skills, please include these in your application.

 Guild of Enamellers Bursary Award 2013

The Guild of Enamellers is pleased to announce news of their 2013 Bursary Award.

The Award winner will have a free place at the Guild of Enamellers Conference in April 2013, with the opportunity to exhibit their work and enter for a range of awards, as well as free membership of the Guild & access to the extensive Guild library.

The winner will also receive; free editorial in ‘craft&design’ magazine as well as the Guild’s journal and website; a year’s subscription to ‘craft&design’; a one to one business mentoring session; vouchers to purchase tools & equipment from Vitrum Signum; in total the award is worth more than £1,000.

The Guild’s aims are to encourage and promote the art and craft of enamelling, to seek to exert a progressive influence on standards of workmanship and design in enamelling, and to foster good public relations.

Artists in Conversation with Siobhan Davies and Professor Simon Olding

Side by Side, a project in partnership with the Crafts Study Centre, University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, brings together craft artist Helen Carnac and dance artist Laila Diallo for two three week residencies. Following their residency at the Crafts Study Centre, Carnac and Diallo will be spending three weeks at Siobhan Davies Studios exploring the processes of making work in and across their creative enquiries. 

The two artists will be joined in conversation by Siobhan Davies and Professor Simon Olding from the Crafts Study Centre, which will touch on issues of making, sharing, collaborating and expression across the two forms of practice that may seem, at first glance, unrelated.

Are you looking for support and advice tailor-made for your contemporary craft practice? Are you within two years of setting up? Are you looking to develop a strong foundation and peer-group to help you make the best start? 

Now in its third intake, Hothouse provides forty emerging makers each year with a six month programme of business and creative development, complemented with 1:1 support. The programme includes: group sessions on developing business skills, market knowledge and creativity, a series of networking events which will bring together all Hothouse cohorts, support from a peer buddy and individual sessions with a mentor from the sector.

 Call for proposals - Farnham Jubilee Craft Commission 

Farnham Maltings invites proposals from artists and makers for a commission up to £15,000 to mark the Queen’s Jubilee. 

Farnham Maltings is a collection of buildings set in the heart of Farnham that provides a place in which people can imagine, create and discover. 

The Jubilee Craft Commission was born out of Farnham Town Council’s desire to mark the Queen’s Jubilee. The original plan to improve the outside space alongside the Maltings and the River Wey. Our hope is to commission a bespoke piece of work for this space that reflects our affection for the crafts. 

Whilst we do not have a fixed idea of what the finished work will be it should:

• encourage people to use the space

• improve the appearance of the space

• be sympathetic to the building

• mark the Queen’s Jubilee (this doesn’t mean it has to have a royal crest in the middle of the finished work)!

• reflect the tradition of craft in Farnham

• not be a mural (we would not rule out other proposals that make use of the walls)

• be practical and have a functionality

The long bench at Littlehampton is a good example of a bespoke piece of work that fulfils some, but not all, of the above criteria.

Applicants should submit:

• an A4 written proposal for the installation (no more than one side)

• images and/or sketched ideas 

• A personal CV

Deadline for applications: Thursday 26 July 2012

It is expected that we will work with two or three makers to develop initial ideas and then decide on one commission. Our hope is that the work can be realised in this year.
