Here is a US link to the book Rebbecca alerted us to: Material Matters: New Materials in Design. I just pre-ordered my copy from Amazon...:-)

Description:

Material Matters: New Materials in Design explores the fascinating world of materials, surveying characteristics, properties and new applications of materials in diverse fields, from sustainable resources to medicine, architectural design to aeronautical engineering and interior design to ‘haute-culture’ and fashion.

Material Matters profiles the most fascinating materials developed in recent years with full page profiles and colorful illustrations, examples include Aerogel or ‘frozen smoke’—used by NASA it is the lightest solid on earth at 95% air. Amongst the detailed profiles are texts that discuss the fusion between science, art and design in the creation of these substances and their importance within contemporary living, sustainability and expanding technologies. The book also includes the work of cutting edge designers Marc Newson, Ross Lovegrove, Apple, NASA, Intel, Ron Arad and household names.

Hello All,

The Institute of Making's Creative Director and Curator of Materials, Zoe Laughlin, and our star post-doctoral researcher, Philip Howes, have written a book... Material Matters: New Materials in Design.

"Materials matter. They are the stuff that constitutes the things around us; from mountains to mugs, everything is made from something." With an opening line like this, who could resist?

You can order a copy via the usual on-line channels and hopefully find it in some good bookshops, but the publishers have issues a press release, as well as a special 40% discount voucher for the Institute of Making followers.

Zoe will also be doing a lecture demonstration at The Barbican on Wednesday the 11th of July entitled The Performativty of Matter. Tickets can be booked in advance or paid for on the door. More information here. http://www.barbican.org.uk/artgallery/event-detail.asp?ID=13663&...

We hope to see some of you there.

Best wishes,
The Institute of Making

MAKING IT:  MAKER OPPORTUNITIES

Designer-makers are invited to submit proposals to create a temporary installation / intervention over four days from 11th to 14th October 2012 in the Discovery Centre, Winchester.    5 Makers will be selected to respond to the key aims of the MAKING IT project, combining their unique making skills to reveal process, stimulate dialogue and conversations, which engages the public.   The fee is £1,000 inclusive.

In addition, Hampshire based designer-makers are invited to submit proposals to demonstrate their work and lead workshops for MAKING IT audiences, which could comprise other makers, teachers and the general public.

MAKING IT, is an ambitious craft project which aims to reveal the process and relationship between the craft of hand and mind, between object and word and through learning and making.  It aims to demonstrate that craft is the tool to investigate wider ideology, which is active, participatory and implicit in every day lives and in creative development.    MAKING IT is a collaborative between Alice Kettle, Making Space, the Centre for Real-World Learning at the University of Winchester and Hampshire County Council.

The deadline for applications:  FRIDAY 13th July 2012
