The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

The Nottingham Castle Annual Open starts in October 2011 and remains the familiar and much-loved Annual Open event that has been a regular feature of the Castle's programme since 1878: a visual feast celebrating the best of East Midlands' artistic talent.

Metalwork has played a central role in our lives for centuries, from everyday domestic objects to the ceremonial commissions found in churches and government buildings. Combining works from the permanent collection and the Goldsmiths’ Company Collection, on loan from London, this exciting new exhibition showcases some of the most prominent figures in the history of British metalworking and explores how they have engaged with this versatile material.

Lucy Woodley - STEMS, 3rd of May - 29th June

Jewellery normally only comes to life when it is being worn, but Lucy Woodley has always thought that it could be so much more than this. In this exhibition she explores possible solutions by developing different ways of displaying jewellery when it is not being worn. Each piece is integrated into a background which echoes the design, creating a whole new decorative object and extending the function of the piece.

Contemporary Applied Arts is delighted to announce the launch of Jacqueline Mina’s major retrospective show. Timed to follow her critically acclaimed show at The Goldsmiths’ Company, this touring exhibition offers the opportunity of acquiring rare and unrepeatable pieces dating from the 1980’s to the present day.

Comment by Rebecca Skeels on June 10, 2011 at 4:34am: Made in the Middle is the Midland’s principal open selling exhibition of contemporary craft, which takes place every three years. It promotes the best of recent craft from makers with a regional connection and it is popular with audiences, galleries and collectors. Besides achieving an excellent level of sales, many makers gain from further commissions and exhibiting opportunities.

This is the seventh exhibition in the ongoing Made in the Middle series, originated by Craftspace. This year for the first time, East meets West as the exhibition will also feature work from makers based in or affiliated to the East Midlands, to reflect the skill and work available within the whole region.

The exhibition will launch at mac birmingham on 21st January 2012 and will tour for approximately eighteen months. Made in the Middle will launch in the East Midlands at The National Centre for Craft & Design.
