Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

Celebrating the artwork of four artists working with natural materials, and through doing so exploring the natural environments which inspire their practice. Laura Ellen Bacon, Adam Buick, Sharon Adams and Stuart Cairns’ work comes together in an exhibition that looks at the beauty of natural materials, shapes and forms, and an immersion in the sensory experience of making.

Exhibitions

Touchstones Rochdale offers a wide variety of exhibitions in the Heritage Gallery and the Art Gallery's four gallery spaces including those from the local community, selections from the borough's impressive art collection and work by contemporary artists.

Apply for the Arts Center's world-renowned Arts/Industry residency program! Up to sixteen exceptional artists from around the world are chosen each year for two- to six-month residencies in the Pottery or Iron/Brass Foundry and Enamel shop in Kohler Co.'s Kohler, Wisconsin, plant. With the guidance of an excellent staff, artists of all disciplines can explore new ideas and technologies in order to create a body of work impossible in their own studio as well as new ways of thinking and working. Previous experience with clay or metal sculpture is not required.

keeping you up to date! Chairs report! two sections....
I’m pleased to report another year of continuing achievement and development.
Membership has remained stable at over 400; members enjoying an increase in benefits and discounts. We are grateful to Cooksongold, H S Walsh, Sutton Tools, Bellore, TH March and Clear Insurance, who all provide significant discounts to members.
Our annual members’ exhibitions provide opportunities for publicity and promotion for individuals as well as the Association. Over the last four years we have staged exhibitions at various locations across the UK. This year Sleight of Hand was shown in three venues: Burton on Trent, Edinburgh and Plymouth. Supporting seminars and workshops were arranged for two of the venues. The Board appreciate the benefits of annual exhibitions and have made arrangements with other venues covering the next two years!

Ann Veronica Janssens: yellowbluepink

Installation

15 October 2015 - 3 January 2016
This new installation by Ann Veronica Janssens explores light and colour as she invades the gallery with coloured mist. Colour is caught in a state of suspension, obscuring any detail of surface or depth. Instead, attention is focussed on the process of perception itself. Janssens’s work is both disorienting and uplifting as the daily wonder of conscious experience is given renewed emphasis.

Some show highlights...

For 9 years, the Handmade in Britain shows have been an annual celebration of the very best of contemporary fine crafts. The fairs have showcased some of the sector’s biggest talents and continue to provide a launch pad for new graduates and emerging designers. The result is a truly unique and festive event, set to the glamourous backdrop of the Chelsea Old Town Hall. With innovative design alongside truly exceptional craftsmanship, visitors this year were once again treated to a dazzling variety of form, function and style from over 120 highly skilled designer-makers.

Some wonderful creative talent...

This year, Handmade in Britain 15 welcomed an exceptional calibre of work from over 120 exhibitors, each handpicked by our panel of industry experts which included Marianne Lumholdt, Mar Mar Co; Kate Bentley, Bils & Rye Gallery; Dan Goode, Home of Artisans; Ian Rudge, Clarion Events and Judith Harris, The Conran Shop. The exhibitors demonstrated extraordinary talent across fashion and interiors, offering an exciting variety of absolute craftsmanship from all four corners of the UK.

ABOUT: the CALL OUT

We invite speakers to take part in the Beyond Jewellery symposium to coincide with the exhibition flockOmania2, an exhibition and live performance event which crosses boundaries between jewellery and dance (please see further info below).  Located within the field of contemporary art jewellery and with a keynote presentation from Di Mainstone, this symposium explores the relationships between sculptural objects, the body and performance.  In doing so, Beyond Jewellery offers a space to interrogate and reflect upon interdisciplinary projects interested in the body as a meeting place or nexus for collaboration.

Proposal submissions might include (but are not limited to) the following themes:

  • OBJECTS – embodied objects, wearable objects in motion and in performance, artefact as performance, experiments with scale and materiality
  • BODY – notions of the post-human body, inter-subjectivity in performance, the mediated body and haptic knowing
  • COLLABORATION – creative partnerships, co-creating and emerging process orientated making practices
  • BOUNDARIES – interdisciplinary adventures, blurring boundaries and disciplinary rule-breaking
  • PERFORMANCE – composing the object, activating objects through performance, sonic landscapes, sites of sensorial investigation and temporal relationships
  • AUDIENCE – engagement and interaction, performative making, playful encounters and audience as co-creators

The symposium will offer a space for discussion, engagement, debate and experimentation, and aims to initiate dialogue around the role of the body in creative practice. We invite proposals from scholars, artists and research students in a range of modes and formats including: 20 minute papers, curated panels, artists talks, film, performance lectures, 10 min lightning talks, and performative interventions.
