The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

This month's featured maker for Craft in Focus: Suzy Grimshaw - Jeweller.   Suzy designs and makes jewellery from her London based studio. Following a career with a large high street retailer, managing a franchise store group, she took a leap of faith and went back to college to study jewellery manufacture and design. Four years later, and having seen her work exhibited in both the V & A and Science Museum, she launched her business. Suzy has been showing at Craft in Focus shows since 2012.   https://www.craftinfocus.com/suzy-grimshaw

The starting focus of her work is simplistic shapes. Suzy explains, ‘I like to explore the void inside the shapes and create patterns within these using precious metal, semi precious stones or beads and silk. The use of this internal void came when studying the work of Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo.

I also love to work with fine chain. Using traditional jewellery making skills I make a frame for the chain links, this is then soldered, polished and hand stitched with fine silk threads to create fluid ribbon like jewellery. As each piece is handmade individually, it is always going to be unique to you. Lately I have also been hand knotting chain which gives really interesting textures and feels wonderful to wear.’

AUTOR Magazine #6 /// Call for Submissions

The Beauty Issue

How do you define beauty? What pleases your eye and tickles your heart and your mind?

Beauty and Jewelry have always been intimately connected and evolved through time side by side. Observe art, watch a movie, or look around you in the real world. Beauty usually is framed by jewelry. And jewelry as an “addition” and an “extra”, attempts to enhance beauty and bring it into focus.

...

AUTOR Magazine is about contemporary and art jewelry and its unique relationship to the human body. Adorn and be indulged by beauty… This is your chance to BE the magazine – there are no limits to fame, so be as famous as you can imagine.

SEND: jewelry that stands out, strong visuals of bodies adorned, honest writing, authentic voices, unexpected angles, connection and intimacy. We’re looking for jewelry-related projects, photo editorials, visual or digital art, texts, interviews, confessions.

E-mail for submissions >>> mag@dautor.ro

Deadline for submission: 25 February
