Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

The Western Isles is the first region of the UK and only the second in Europe to be awarded World Craft City status.

While not a city, the Outer Hebrides are being recognised for a centuries-long production of Harris Tweed.

The award has been made as part of the staging of World Craft Council Europe's general assembly in Edinburgh.

It is the first time in 15 years that the gathering of international craftspeople has taken place in Scotland.

The Danish island of Bornholm is Europe's other holder of craft city status.

Globally, cities and regions of Chile, Thailand, Iran, India and Jordan have the designation.

WEARABILITY AND THE POWER OF THE SMALL ART
An Outsider's View
by Sarah Thornton

"I recently encountered a fascinating subculture, populated mostly by women who make, buy, and sell small objects in a vast range of materials that they sometimes install on their bodies."

Sarah Thornton, an ethnographer and sociologist of art, outlines six reasons why art jewelry could have an advantage over fine art, but also points out some ways the field might reposition itself in order to garner more respect.
