The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

Scythians: Warriors of Ancient Siberia

British Museum

14 Sep 2017 – 14 Jan 2018

New archaeological and scientific discoveries are also used to shed light on this fascinating period of ancient history.

Gold applique showing two archers back to back, Kul Oba, 400BC-350BC

The Scythians were a large group of Iranian Eurasians who made up one of the great nomadic civilisations of antiquity. First mentioned by the Assyrians in the 9th century BC, they were ruled by a wealthy class known as the Royal Scyths. After establishing a vast trade network across Greece, Persia, India and China and learning to master mounted warfare, they were able to dominate a huge region stretching from Siberia to the Black Sea.

The Scythians valued decorative objects and developed a rich artistic culture characterised by opulent tombs, fine metalwork, and a brilliant art style. This exhibition includes royal Scythian tombs from Siberia and Kazakhstan, multi-coloured rugs, fur-lined garments and accessories, unique horse headgear, beautiful gold objects and more.

Street Fans

The Fan Museum

19 September – 31 December 2017
Free with National Art Pass

Keeping things cool in both senses of the word is a new exhibition combining two rather different art forms: fan-making and street art.

A colourful collaboration between The Fan Museum and Paris-based street artist Codex Urbanus, Street Fans sees internationally recognised artists such as Jonesy, Zokatos and Levalet team up with expert fan-maker Sylvain Le Guen to create unique hand-held fans.

Bringing the endangered practice of fan-making into conversation with the globally popular street art phenomenon, this unusual show demonstrates the Greenwich museum’s commitment to promoting its specialism in imaginative, stimulating ways – and was supported by an Art Happens crowdfunding campaign.

On show are some 50 original folding fans displaying a huge range of design techniques, incorporating everything from precise geometric compositions to typographic scribblings reminiscent of ancient hieroglyphics.

The exhibition goes beyond the Fan Museum, too, with a programme of related events including a 'paint jam' and a fan-making workshop at Greenwich Market.
