The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

May Policy Brief

This month:

As we approach the General Election on June 8th, we’ve included a round-up of related news: a summary of the main parties’ manifesto commitments on arts and culture, highlights from other organisations’ manifestos for the creative industries, arts and culture, plus news of new metro mayors, delays to the museums and galleries tax credit, and evidence to a curtailed Lords’ inquiry of the detrimental effect of the Ebacc on arts subjects.
Craft Scotland, Cockpit Arts and the Heritage Crafts Association have published new research on craft businesses.
New findings on culture spend in international cities, on audience development practices across Europe and on how arts projects help to integrate refugees.
New research on creative jobs from Nesta and on creative internships from IPPR.
Plus, American Craft Inquiry, a new biannual journal from the American Craft Council.

Assembly Newcastle, 13-14 June 2017

How do artists, their activities and communities help to shape the identity of a city, and how can the ‘cultural value’ artists bring be better articulated to create stable and sustainable infrastructures for artists in the future? For Assembly Bristol, one of five a-n Assembly events taking place across the UK during May and June this year, a-n has devised a programme of events with Bristol-based artist Julie McCalden.

The Assembly, which takes barriers to practice as a point of departure, was shaping up nicely, when the snap election was called right smack bang in the middle of it.

Embracing this serendipitous straddling, artists are invited to descend upon the Brunswick Club – where the majority of events will be hosted – for a programme of artist-led discussions and unconventional workshops. Based in St Pauls with its skittle alleys, dance hall, bars and lounges, the Brunswick Club is being inhabited by over thirty artists, performers, film-makers and curators for a 9-month project.

Complemented by a-n led professional development sessions, a post-election breakfast and a feast for the masses will provide social opportunities for celebrating, commiserating and letting off steam.

What to expect at Flourish

Designed with makers in mind, this informal and engaging two day event will cover topics such as brand identity; working with galleries; marketing and social media; working internationally and growing your financial potential.

You'll also be able to discuss key questions about your practice with other delegates, experts and the Crafts Council Talent Development team.

With a keynote address from Christian Manz, award-winning visual effects artist, plus great speakers including potter Keith Brymer-Jones and textile designer Margo Selby, it's sure to be an inspiring two days.
