The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

Subject Leader and Programme Coordinator – Conservation of Clocks and Dynamic Objects
West Dean College
Location:     Chichester
Salary:     £38,000 per annum
Hours:     Full Time
Contract Type:     Permanent
Placed on:     9th May 2017
Closes:     23rd May 2017

The Edward James Foundation is a charitable educational trust located on the 6,400 acre West Dean Estate in beautiful West Sussex countryside near Chichester, specialising in creative and applied arts.  As well as being a respected educational institution; the historic house and collections, the stunning grounds and gardens open to the public, and the year round events and exhibitions make West Dean truly unique.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic conservation professional to be the Subject Leader specialising in Clocks and Dynamic Objects.  Working within the School of Conservation, the post holder will be responsible for the organisation and delivery of subject specialist curriculum for conservation of clocks and related dynamic objects at Graduate Diploma and Masters level, as well as having responsibility for the co-ordination and management of some aspects of cross-school curriculum as agreed with the Head of School.

The Clocks department comprises one of five conversation disciplines offered at West Dean, with courses ranging from Foundation Diploma to MA; validated by the University of Sussex.  Subject-specific study within the broad contextual experience of a multi-disciplinary conservation college, a low staff-to-student ratio, extensive workshop time and international profile, contribute to a unique experience. With the course established for over four decades West Dean Alumni are leading practitioners both in the UK and beyond.

Don't forget!

Collect: The International Art Fair for Contemporary Objects, presented by the Crafts Council, is returning to the Saatchi Gallery from 22 to 25 February 2018.

Collect Open offers a unique opportunity to exhibit alongside international galleries showing the very best contemporary craft from around the world. It has been a rich addition to the fair since 2011 and encourages artists to show work which challenges traditional perceptions of craft and design.

This is a unique opportunity to present the unexpected to an influential and high-profile audience. We are interested in receiving proposals from individuals and collectives to present large scale, conceptual, installation based work.

Criteria for the brief:

New direction from the applicant / focusing on ambitious, challenging and risk taking work
New body of work / first showing is mandatory
Strong theming and curation by the applicant
Aesthetics and coherence of the work proposed

Note: Collect Open is principally for contemporary design and applied arts, therefore applications will not be accepted for painting, drawing, graphic design, print-making, photography or fine art sculpture.

Online applications for Collect Open will close at midnight 11 June 2017

Reach a new global audience

Together with The New Craftsmen and renowned architect and interior designer Natalia Miyar, we’re inviting emerging makers to become a part of our showcase at Miami Art Week and Design Miami in December this year.

We’re looking for bold, playful, tactile objects which can transform interiors and inspire audiences – and which demonstrate first class making skills, creativity and imagination. Successful participants will have the opportunity to present ambitious pieces and reach a new global audience.

Deadline for applications: 11 June 2017

Sad news. .... Velvet da Vinci in San Francisco is closing. After 26 years it has been a good long run! It has been a privilege to work with so many inspiring artists, first in Hayes Valley and for the last 13 years in the wonderful space on Polk Street. Heartfelt thanks to the many loyal customers, colleagues and friends who have supported the gallery for so long. To the hard working VdV team, Diane Komater, Nikki Couppee, Amy Tavern (and Sienna Freeman!) I will miss you more than I can say. The gallery will be winding down during May and June and will close by July 1. If there is a special piece that you have been thinking about... now is the time to get it!

Although the gallery will be closing Velvet da Vinci can still be found online. You can visit the gallery archive on the website and I plan to develop the online business at velvetdavinci.com in the future. Follow the gallery on Instagram and Facebook. There are a few projects still in the works that I would love to see through so there is a good chance that Velvet da Vinci will Pop-Up from time to time... I'm not sure what the next chapter will bring but I look forward to see what happens. Thanks for being part of the adventure.

A Velvet da Vinci Closing Party will take place on Saturday June 3, 2017, 5-9 pm. Details to come. Hope to see you there!

xx Mike Holmes
