The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

In mid-March, Munich Jewelry Week draws people to one city to view almost 100 jewelry events happening throughout it. AJF will be there, hosting an AJF group touring the city; selling books at the FRAME section of the main event space--the International Handwerksmesse--thanks to the generosity of Galerie Marzee; planning for the future of AJF during our board retreat; and in the streets, connecting with many of you over a mutual appreciation (and extreme abundance) of art jewelry.

If you aren't able to be there with us in Munich, we invite you to explore AJF's archives and see the Best of ... reports from MJW 2016, 2015, and 2014; an article featuring Wolfgang Lösche, director of the SCHMUCK, TALENTE, and MODERNE MASTERS exhibitions; an interview with the 2014 curator of SCHMUCK, Jorunn Veiteberg; and the six-part In Sight Series from 2013. https://artjewelryforum.org/articles-series?taxonomy_vocabulary_2_t...

collaborations have been the starting point for many iconic designs, processes, materials and techniques. The studio provides an environment where people can meet, ask questions and find inspiration relevant to their industry.

A programme of material workshops, talks and drop in sessions sits alongside a large scale installation and displays in the main event space from material specialists, engineers, architects, designers and craftspeople as a live example of serendipitous design and collaboration.

There’s plenty to see and do whether that’s delving into the materials library and getting to grips with 3D printing as a design process, or simply uncovering the hub of craftsmanship that is the Goldsmith’s Centre.

Tue 23 – Thu 25 May 2017
Entry to Studio – Free
Event programme Free – £5

Illuminated Loops: Live Music and Synaesthetic Art Performance: An extraordinary live art performance by the UK’s leading solo bass guitarist, Steve Lawson and acclaimed synaesthetic visual artist Poppy Porter. Poppy's synaesthesia gives her a visual response to sound, especially music. As Steve plays, building a glorious, layered, soundscape, Poppy responds through large scale drawings of what she “sees” synaesthetically (shape, colour, movement). Steve then uses the fresh drawings as a visual score and improvises further. A feedback loop is created between them the sound building the drawing and the drawing influencing the music. Although music and visual art are diverse disciplines there is a meeting of minds that pushes beyond the physical object or sonic creation and gives rise to a visual, musical, aural and performance artwork. The resulting blend of electronica, ambient, post-rock & experimental music with the evolving, beguiling visual landscape of Poppy’s art is unique to every performance, and not to be missed!

Graphene, an allotrope of carbon, is a wonderful, relatively new material with a lot of potential. It is ultrathin – only one atom thick – lightweight, conductive, flexible, thermal, and the strongest known material. In short, it can be used for many applications. Researchers at the National Graphene Institute collaborated with the fashion designers of Cute Circuit to create a ‘little black dress’ with a high tech twist: it has graphene-enhanced sensors lined throughout the garment’s top half that capture the wearer’s breathing patterns, which light up integrated LED lights. https://materia.nl/article/graphene-dress-lights-breathe/?utm_sourc...

This huge artwork resembling coral, called Under Magnitude and made by architect Marc Fornes and his studio The Very Many, is made of strips of white, hand-curved perforated aluminium, which are riveted together. Each piece has a thickness of just one millimetre (0.04 inch), but is bent in such a way that it is strong enough to stand on. https://materia.nl/article/artwork-perforated-aluminium/?utm_source...
