The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

This week, we give you another sneak-peak of what you can expect at Material Xperience 2017! One of the lectures will be given by Raffaello Galiotto, and you can also see the exhibition Luce e Materia, which he created.

workshop RUUDT PETERS  assistant KOEN JACOBS

After the success of the last 16 years, this year Ruudt Peters begins his summer workshop under the title NOW RADICAL. Peters has been a professor at three of the most prestigious universities in Europe, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam 1990-2000, Ädellab at Konstfack University of Arts and Crafts in Stockholm 2004-2009, Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School in Florence 2009-2015. Through his Summer School he continues his teaching with a private program intended for students or graduates of art academies, and artists/designers/teachers who seek to deepen their work. Every year an international group of fine art artists and jewelry-makers participate in his workshop. The workshops are held in the countryside in the south of the Netherlands.

NOW RADICAL
Jewellery making is a safe profession, it focuses on decoration and adornment. It is difficult to keep concepts clear to the end – the wearer looking always over the shoulder of the maker. In NOW RADICAL we will avoid the voice of society, of mothers and fathers, we will try to be as personally radical as possible. We will turn away from trends in the field, we seek a ‘radical’ that does not rage against an external machine... but instead challenges and overturns the regulations within our own practices. We have to go over borders before we see our own habits. In NOW RADICAL we will each seek a unique and personal ‘radicality’ .

The 2017 awards ceremony and dinner will take place on the evening of Wednesday 1 March 2017. You can now book your tickets for 2017s Creative & Cultural Skills Awards.

2016 Jewellery Skills Award went to:

Peter Taylor, Director, The Goldsmiths’ Centre

"Inspiring and supporting aspiring craftspeople into lifelong careers in goldsmithing is an incredibly rewarding job. Since opening the Goldsmiths’ Centre in Clerkenwell in 2012, I have seen numerous talented and passionate young people receive the relevant education and training opportunities to enter this rewarding industry. I am immensely proud to be considered for this award, not only in recognition of my work to support and promote the UK jewellery industry, but also for the Goldsmiths’ Centre and its young craftspeople who amaze me daily with their talent and dedication to uphold this ancient craft."

We wanted to let you know about a new competition being launched for students with Ingle & Rhode, called the Fairtrade Gold Design Awards. https://www.ingleandrhode.co.uk/awards/

Open to UK-based jewellery students, apprentices, and those at the start of their jewellery careers, these awards will showcase the talents of emerging jewellery designers, while raising awareness of Fairtrade gold amongst the people who are the future of our industry.

Once you've been registered for the Awards, you will be invited to submit a design for either a wedding ring, an engagement ring or a wedding and engagement ring set.

A judging panel from Ingle & Rhode, The Fairtrade Foundation, The Goldsmiths' Company, Vipa Designs, and the jewellery journalist Rachael Taylor, will award commendations to the designs they believe deserve special recognition, and will pick the overall winner.

The overall winner will receive £500, valuable work experience, and the opportunity to see their design transformed into a stunning piece of Fairtrade gold jewellery.

Winners will be announced in four categories:
•Students in further education

•Apprentices

•Undergraduates

•Postgraduate students, and those early in their careers (working in the jewellery industry for less than 3 years)

Ingle & Rhode will create the winning design in Fairtrade gold and fully-traceable ethically-produced diamonds. The finished piece will be loaned to the winner to exhibit at their end of year show and/or the New Designers exhibition, before it is auctioned by Ingle & Rhode to raise money for the Fairtrade Foundation.

To register for the Awards, please complete the form on their website - https://www.ingleandrhode.co.uk/awards/
by Sunday 12th February 2017.

We hope you will consider entering and please let us know if you have any questions!

With very best wishes,
