The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

ACJ has regional groups throughout the country. If you would like to start a group in your area, or get in touch with other members nearby, please contact us.

There is a new regional group – ACJ-JSN based in Farnham. For more information and to get in touch with its members, contact Jennifer Saker at j.saker@jennifersaker.com.

ACJ Kent: Mark Fenn has migrated to Wales, and has therefore resigned from co-ordinatiing ACJ Kent. Thanks, Mark for your efforts. Jane Carter-Lilley is now the co-ordinator jcarterlilley@btinternet.com

Enamelling is an ancient art and a mysterious alchemy dating back to 16th century BC. Today enamellers continue to push the boundaries of how they can apply powdered glass onto metal surfaces to create their very best work.

The story of this complex and colourful craft is told through examples of contemporary enamelling by distinguished members of the British Society of Enamellers (BSoE), such as Jane Short, Ruth Ball, Tamar de Vries Winter, Phil Barnes, Sheila McDonald, Alex Raphael and Joan Mackarell, as well as work from new graduates such as Sophie Warringham & Mark Newman, with examples of commercial & industrial enamelling.

In partnership with the British Society of Enamellers.

As part of celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of Woman’s Hour, the BBC is launching The Woman’s Hour Craft Prize 2017, in association with the Crafts Council and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Can beautiful objects enhance your life?

Over the past 70 years Woman’s Hour has championed and celebrated both the craft of listeners and of craft practitioners and in that tradition the launch of the prize coincides with the celebrations for the anniversary year.

On air Woman’s Hour will cover highlights of the crafting calendar, profile the history of the seven craft prize entry categories, interview the finalists, reflect the impact craft can have on health and innovation, and celebrate craft on air through exhibitions, discussions, demonstrations and interviews with practitioners, hoping to inspire our audience to make and create.

Comment by Rebecca Skeels on October 13, 2016 at 12:24pm: To foster new talent and support early career artists, we run two Starter Studios here at Yorkshire Artspace: one for Designer Silversmiths & Jewellers and one for Ceramicists.

The Starter Studios are an ideal next step for recent graduates looking to develop their skills and creative enterprises in a supportive environment, the Starter Studios offer access to:

·         shared workspace and equipment
·         technical and mentor support
·         business advice
·         commission and exhibition opportunities

We’re hosting an Open Weekend during our annual Open Studios event taking place 18-20 Nov, and we’d love to see you there! The Starter Studios will be open for you to see the facilities for yourself, and both current and previous participants and mentors will be available to discuss their experiences of the Starter Studios.

You will be free to 'curate' your own visit at your own pace by following the starter studio trail (look out for the silver stars on studio doors) at the same time as enjoying the wider Open Studio event.

This invitation is for ceramic/silversmith students in any year, or relevant course tutors/staff - come individually or as a group.
