FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Halstead Grant Award Increases in 2016

PRESCOTT, Arizona, USA (December, 2015): The 11th annual Halstead Grant is growing, with an increased prize of $7500 in cash, $1000 in supplies, and a feature article in a new, annual grant publication. The competition places equal emphasis on jewelry design excellence and business strategy acumen.

The 2016 Halstead Grant Winner prize also includes: trip to Prescott, Arizona; signature trophy; feature profile and jewelry showcase in catalog; extensive coverage on the Halstead website and social media channels; press release to industry and local media; and a feedback report from the judging committee.

New for 2016, Halstead Grant Finalists will receive $500 cash for Top 5 placement or $250 for Top 10 placement. Finalist awards also include: Coverage in the new annual grant publication; signature Grant Finalist trophy; blog profile; media exposure; press release assistance; and a feedback report from the judging committee.

Now in its second decade, the program continues to evolve and grow. This year, Halstead is pleased to announce a guest juror for the first time. Cathleen McCarthy, founder of The Jewelry Loupe and an established industry consultant, will join the Halstead judging team late this summer. Hilary Halstead Scott, President of Halstead says, "Cathleen brings a wealth of experience to the jury room. We are excited to incorporate her fresh insights and historical expertise on the designer jewelry field."

In other news, the Halstead Grant signature trophy for the winner and finalists will be designed by Rebecca Rose of Sculpturings in Orlando, FL, winner of the Grant herself in 2013.

Halstead Scott says, "Past winners agree that receiving the award was a turning point early in their careers when they were wavering on whether or not the jewelry studio was the right place for them."  2015 Halstead Grant Winner Samantha Skelton says, "Prior to the application process, I had been working towards small goals. But, being able to see a big picture has really helped me take the next steps forward."

Crafts Council launch report today

6 July 2016

Craft makers are the “hidden heroes” of the UK’s innovation economy. This is according to Innovation through craft: Opportunities for Growth - a new Crafts Council commissioned report by KPMG which launched today at the Royal Society of Arts.

According to the report, government and business must better understand and better invest in the sector or risk losing a £3.4 billion industry to global competitors in Europe and Asia.

"Like Britain's tech sector, the innovation being driven by Britain's craft makers is world leading. From biotech, to wearables, to robotics, craft skills are leading to ground-breaking advances across all areas of our economy. But the sector needs to be better understood by government and business. The tech sector in the UK has boomed because investors and government realised the incredible growth potential within the industry. The same can be true in craft. The industry is already valued at £3.4 billion annually but it has the potential to be even bigger if it gets the support it needs."
Nicola Mendelsohn CBE, Vice President EMEA at Facebook

While Brexit will affect nearly every facet of the UK economy – the country is enjoying a “making boom” with over 150,000 professionals driving design and innovation across a multitude of industries.

Makers devising embroidered surgical implants, designing drug catheters, and using origami techniques to create new ways of manipulating metal are just some of the examples of how the craft sector is adding value to the economy and making it a world leader in innovation.

The Crafts Council in collaboration with KPMG have established a seven point action plan to boost Britain’s craft innovators

  • Action 1: Invest in enhanced activity to showcase and publicise the value of, and opportunities for, craft innovation through cross-sector collaboration.
  • Action 2:  Broker and co-ordinate business-to-business collaborations between craft experts and businesses from other sectors, with lead bodies in engineering, technology and manufacturing working together with bodies such as the Crafts Council, Innovate UK and KTN.
  • Action 3: Ensure that development of industry strategies by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) involves makers and materials experts
  • Action  4: Develop the role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) as network hubs for driving innovation and collaboration between craft and industry
  • Action 5: Offer innovation vouchers or competitions to facilitate and incentivise business-to-business collaborations between craft and other sectors
  • Action 6: Develop the ‘fused' education agenda to ensure that all levels of the education system supports students to develop their creative, practical talents alongside their scientific, technological and enterprise skills
  • Action 7: Facilitate collaboration between businesses and other sectors at a local level, potentially through Local Enterprise Partnerships, local authorities and growth hubs, with support from Crafts Council

Innovation through Craft: Opportunities for Growth was launched at Royal Society of Arts on 6 July

The Association for Contemporary Jewellery has awarded its annual prize at New Designers, the Mark Fenn Award, to Rebecca Wilkes, a graduate from Birmingham’s School of Jewellery.

Rebecca was chosen from all the graduating students currently showing their work at New Designers, London. She has just completed her BA Design for Industry course at Birmingham City University, achieving First Class Honours.

Her ‘Floral Focus’ collection, being shown at New Designers, is wonderfully bright and exciting. She has a range of metal rings with at least 10 interchangeable tops. These tops are produced by the 3D printing process from nylon and selectively dyed in shades of pink and blue. They attach to the ring shanks by integrated magnets.

The use of nylon for the main feature provides benefits of lightness, softness and flexibility, plus the potential to achieve and colour range and combination.

The judges were impressed by Rebecca’s single-minded pursuit of an overall style and dedication to achieving retail-ready quality.

The judges were also aware that this is the second year running where this award has gone to a maker employing 3D printing. Both recipients, however, used it to produce work completely opposite in character and style – testament to their individuality and potential within the process.

Rebecca wins free membership of the ACJ for one year; with thanks to Mark Fenn for his continuing sponsorship of the award.
