Starter Studio Programme
\\ Designer Silversmiths & Jewellers

Are you an ambitious designer silversmith or jeweller in need of a supportive programme offering workspace, equipment, technical & mentor support, business advice plus commission and exhibition opportunities? Our Starter Studio Programme for early career silversmiths and jewellers could be for you.

Designed to provide start-up support for designer makers at an early career stage, the two-year programme has supported more than 30 makers to date, with 80% progressing to set up their own silversmith workshop. The programme has now been running for 15 years and is based at the award winning Persistence Works Studios in Sheffield.

Key Features of the 2 year programme include:

• 24/7 access to shared fully equipped studio space @ £120 per month
• Access to technical and mentor support
• Business advice and support
• Bursary to undertake online training via The Design Trust
• Exhibition and commission opportunities
• 20% discount on regular studio rental for 2 years from completion of the programme (subject to studio availability)

All mentors for the Programme are experienced, nationally known silversmiths and/or jewellers, including include Brett Payne, Chris Knight, Maria Hanson, Rebecca Joselyn, Coilin O’Dubhghaill and Jennie Gill.

Our technical design expert and skills trainer Cameron Maxfield, who offers support to all our programme beneficiaries on a weekly basis, recently won the prestigious Marsh Heritage Skills Trainer award; a prize for passing on valuable traditional craft skills to new generations of silversmiths. In 2013 we were also shortlisted for inaugural Craft Skills Award.

The deadline for applications is 9am, Monday 11th July 2016, with the programme set to commence first week in October 2016. We're able to offer places to three new starters each year and advise potential applicants to visit the Starter Studio workshop at Persistence Works.

Who we are:
Amongst many things, Posh Totty Designs is the original pioneer of hand stamped jewellery. We design & make precious keepsakes that immortalise personal sentiments in a stylish, yet unique way. From a one-woman kitchen-table business just 12 years ago, we’re now proud to run the biggest professional jewellery-making workshop in the South East. Our workshop caters for up to 18 skilled jewellers at any one time, and at peak times we can find ourselves producing up to 500 orders a day. Our presence locally and online is prominent and ever growing- we’re a multi-channel retailer stocking not only our own beautiful boutiques and website, but also some of the biggest marketplaces & department stores online.

Our workshop is the lifeblood of our business and as such we need you to run a tight ship whilst inspiring, teaching and motivating your incredible team of 14 jewellers. With your professional creative background we want you to be ahead of your game in terms of the latest and forecasted trends, always with one eye on the commercial jewellery world, you’ll be the go-to person for developing ideas. Our products are diverse and unique so we naturally fall victim to copy-cats, with this in mind, continued innovation and exciting new seasonal designs are vital. Your role will be very varied and no one day will be the same, excellent time management and delegation is therefore crucial to your role. We’re always learning and evolving so any improved methods or processes you can bring to the table, even better.

CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK (CDW) STAGES “LIVE EVENTS” HUB AT THE GOLDSMITHS’ CENTRE

Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) at the Goldsmiths’ Centre (central image) will feature high calibre speakers, a pop-up exhibition and hands-on workshops in the Museum of Making on St John’s Square.

From 24 to 26 May 2016 the Goldsmiths’ Centre in the heart of Clerkenwell will become the “Live Events” hub for the seventh edition of Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW), the UK’s leading independent design festival. During the festival, CDW in partnership with the Goldsmiths’ Centre will celebrate design innovation hosting CDW’s popular Conversations in Clerkenwell talks alongside Taster Workshops for those in the design field, a pop-up exhibition titled How to build a Goldsmith and drop-in making sessions in a pavilion designed by Swedish practice White Arkitekter, The Museum of Making, on St John’s Square.

The Goldsmiths’ Centre’s unique collaboration with CDW will see the largest event held to date in its venue and turn the spotlight onto its core values “Creativity, Craftsmanship, Community”, bringing together goldsmiths with the wider design community. Conversations in Clerkenwell, sponsored by 250 City Road and curated by CDW, will feature an eminent line-up of speakers exploring current industry topics in the Centre’s Exhibition Room. Key talks include Process – Making and how Craft makes the Difference on 26 May from 12.30pm to 1.30pm, which will see Grant Gibson of Crafts Magazine lead a discussion on how process and craft make the difference with designer-maker Sebastian Cox, Creative Director and designer Theo Williams, Fredrik Färg of design duo Färg & Blanche, plus top jewellery designer and Goldsmiths’ Centre alumni Ivonna Poplanska. This will be followed from 3.30pm to 4.30pm by the talk Re-imagining a Design

We are very much looking to promote Hand Made and British at our shows.

In a Society where we are buying throwaway products, we would like to do our bit in promoting handmade and British and are therefore offering serious discounts to try and make an avenue selling these products.

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a method for 3D printing artificial hair, allowing them to print everything from paintbrushes to fake fur (+ movie).

 

The team, who are from the institute's Tangible Media Group, are able to print hairs as thin as 50 microns in diameter, making possible new types of tactile surfaces.
