The Association for Contemporary Jewellery
is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.
Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.
We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

An Evening with the world renowned jewellery designer Katie Rowland

Jewellery design has always been something of a fine line: inseparable from cutting edge fashion on one side, and rooted in classical design and tradition on the other. Kaite Rowland, the self-proclaimed "Femme Fatale" of the jewellery industry, has become an expert in successfully walking this fine line.
Inspired by women from myth, legend and history, her jewellery also dictates the latest trends. We are privilaged and proud to announce that Katie is taking time out from her busy schedule to come and talk about her life in jewellery design at Holts Academy on MAY 29TH, 6PM at Holts Academy, Karmen House, 62-66 Farringdon Road, EC1R 3GB, - Entrance on Bowling Green Lane.

Following on from our successful DIAMOND JUBILEE and STAIN-LESS exhibitions, we are delighted to announce our 2014 Members' exhibition:
ICONS - jewellery for the famous and infamous, pieces reflecting cultural & design icons
The theme inspired pieces for stars such as David Bowie, Elton John, Patti Smith, Tilda Swinton, Sir David Attenborough and Vivienne Westwood, and work based on design icons like the Anglepoise lamp, classic cars, religious icons and reliquaries and the Shard building. A dazzling array of techniques, styles and materials selected by a panel of jewellery professionals: gallerist Kath Libbert, NCCD's Exhibitions Officer Laura Mabbutt, distinguished jeweller and Crafts Council Trustee Jane Adam, chaired by Professor Jack Cunningham, Head of the School of Jewellery BCU.
Venue: National Centre for Craft & Design, Sleaford, Lincolnshire

The National Centre for Craft & Design in Sleaford, Lincolnshire is the largest venue in England entirely dedicated to the exhibition, celebration and promotion of contemporary international craft and design.The venue hosts a range of internationally significant makers, designers and artists across four gallery spaces.
NCCD also has a retail space with a range of gifts from over 30 makers and a wonderful Riverside Café serving drinks and light bites.

Conserving armour at Arundel Castle
Four of our Conservation of Metalwork studnets have been given a prestigious opportunity to work on a live heritage project at nearby Arundel Castle. The students are in the Armoury, working on four suits of Maximilian-type armour containing parts dating back to the 16thcentury.

Design in Innovation: Design For The Future Seminar

Dear Design Special Interest Group Members,
As part of its Design in Innovation programme, the Knowledge Transfer Network has joined forces with the Design Council to organise four high-level seminars. The aim of these seminars is to consider how design contributes towards and can add value to a range of topical innovation challenges.
We would like to invite you to attend and participate in the fourth and concluding seminar, which will take place on the morning of Monday, 02 June 2014.
This seminar will focus on the topic of ‘Design for the Future’ and will draw on a range of examples and case studies to stimulate discussion on the future possibilities being opened up by technology. It will also aim to inform a debate on how design and the understanding of user-behaviour can help to make technology usable and viable.
The discussion will be chaired by Phil Smith, Chair of the Technology Strategy Board, and will bring together senior business and governmental partners working in different areas of technology innovation.

Materia is presenting over 100 of the most inspiring and innovative smart materials at the British trade show May Design Series. This professional event is a commercial show for designers, architects and specifiers which is held every May.
The Material Xperience On Tour theme for May Design Series, The Smart Environment, ties in strongly to current trends in the world of design. We're going to focus on interaction. We're asking how materials work and what they can do for us.
Split across three themes, the interactive materials on display are all examples of smart materials. Whether they respond in a creative or useful way to external stimuli, or add new technology to existing materials, or simply apply lessons from nature to a designed material, each of the over 100 materials on display has an intelligent innovation to add to the designed and built world.
The Material Xperience On Tour concept includes a selection of our exhibition sponsors. These sponsors are Acosorb, Eeuwenhout, Esthec, Foreco, Made a Mano, Mosa and Plexwood. The exhibition sponsors will be showcasing their latest products, all suited to the built environment.
Examples of the materials on show at May Design Series 2014 include Newspaperwood, a ‘wood’ that is indeed made of newspapers, a leather made of mushroom spores, thermochromic foils, self-healing polymers, anti-bacterial ‘shark’ foils and 2,5 D printed surfaces. In addition, Materia’s creative director Els Zijlstra will lecture on Smart Materials in Architecture on 18th May.
