If you would like to be a part of the Lola Rose team, we are currently looking for people to fill the following positions:

Designer - 

A creative jewellery designer is required to join our team, working with core collections, diffusion ranges and new collections you will be working with semi-precious stones along with fashion pieces and creating new innovative ranges seasonally.

Working within a creative team you will be responsible for trend direction, designing, sample making and you will regularly liaise with factories.

Keeping up to date with current trends and creating new concepts seasonally is a key part of this role. 

You will also be required to travel as part of this role to meet with suppliers, find new manufacturers and get new inspiration.

As an established designer, you must have gained experience within a supplier or brand and have excellent creativity along with a commercial edge. We are looking for a candidate who has lots of passion and enthusiasm along with the skills to manage the range working closely with the rest of the design team and the Managing Director.

Your portfolio must contain reflective hand writing and demonstrate excellent CAD skills.

The Candidate must be open to working as part of a design team and helping with other accessory design projects, not just jewellery.

Must be proficient on Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

This role also offers a great challenge with plenty of variety.

Metal Clay Guild Conference 2012 now open to Non-members The one-day Metal Clay Conference on Sunday 30th September at The Fleet in Fletton, Peterborough is free-of-charge for paid-up Guild Members and non-members are also welcome to attend at a cost of £12 per person. DAVID CLARKE REIMAGINES SILVER AT A NEW SWEDISH EXHIBITION

British silversmith David Clarke has gained international attention for his unique and whimsical approach to this venerable art form. “I have a passion for metal,” he says. “There is a resistance from it—you play with it, coax it, fight it. But I take the traditions of silversmithing to surprising extremes. This absolute willingness to experiment and play inappropriately is core to my work.”

Glenn Adamson, head of research at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, calls Clarke “one of the strongest silversmiths currently working and easily the most prominent avant-garde figure in the medium.” Now, audiences can view the artist’s first solo exhibition, “In Flux,” beginning early next month at Nutida Svenskt Silver in Stockholm, Sweden.

Clarke re-creates objects by modifying not only their shape, but also their interpretation. The results often border on the dreamlike: “The exhibition’s mood is slightly unnerved, slightly surreal, but intriguing, a place you’re drawn into but not sure you would want to go.”

While poking holes in the inflated cultural value of silver by challenging longstanding assumptions about it, Clarke is also aware that he is part of a craft that is very much relevant to British history. “It was not uncommon for silversmiths of yesteryear to melt down objects to make new pieces,” he says. “I think this is a wonderful part of silversmithing.”

Clarke, who graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1997, has given lectures all over the world on the craft, which he is reimagining for 21st-century minds. “I am very concerned about the discipline’s future,” he says, “and so want it not to stand still, pickled in aspic, but to be relevant, vibrant and meaningful to a contemporary audience. It is good that it challenges the viewer’s ideas about what silversmithing is.”

MAKING SPACE is advertising a 2nd Studio award as part of MAKING IT

The first award has gone to DERYN RELPH (Creative Textile Design) - www.derynrelph.co.uk

MAKING IT is a craft project which aims to reveal the process and relationship between the craft of hand and mind, between object and word and through learning and making and how craft is the tool to investigate wider ideology, which is active, participatory and implicit in every day lives and in creative development.   The main event takes place from 12th to 14th October.   MAKING IT is a collaborative project with Alice Kettle, the Centre for Real-World Learning at the University of Winchester and Hampshire County Council.  www.makingitproject.com

Making Space is offering a one-year studio award.  The successful applicant will also receive £1,000 for materials plus £2,000 to support research and development.  Suitable for emerging makers, who have been developing their work for at least 2 years (since graduating), who want to experiment and be open to collaborations, gain from critical dialogue and address how their practice links to the key aims of the project.

The National Association of Goldsmiths (NAG) has announced the launch of an apprenticeship scheme in collaboration with Skillsmart, the retail apprenticeship training agency.

The move follows more than a year of discussion by the NAG on the relative benefits and drawbacks of hiring apprentices. It will now focus on getting young apprentices into retail positions.

A release from the NAG said: “With the current jobs market showing almost 25% of all 18 to 24 year olds unemployed and many who have been forced to take part-time positions to fill a gap in their finances – it seems that industries can no longer rely on government to find a solution. We need to be looking at ways in which we can start bringing these young people in the work place ourselves.”

The NAG will now work closely with Skillsmart to help smaller jewellery retailers find staff that are enthusiastic about building a career in retail.

As a result the NAG is now putting out a call to interested parties in central London, Derbyshire, the North East, Manchester, South and West Yorkshire and the South West. Those interested should contact the NAG’s education department.
