The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

Wellcome Image Awards

21 June - 31 December 2012

Wellcome Image Awards 2012 celebrates the most informative, striking and technically excellent images acquired by the Wellcome Images picture library in the past eighteen months. This year’s winners have used techniques ranging from medical photography to scanning electron microscopy encompassing a breadth of topics across medicine and the life sciences.

From a beautiful confocal micrograph of a bacterial biofilm, to a photograph of open cardiothoracic surgery, the sixteen winning images showcase the quality and diversity of images available for public use through the Wellcome Library’s image repository, Wellcome Images.

Each image has been carefully selected by a panel of judges including Fergus Walsh (Medical correspondent for the BBC), Alice Roberts (anatomist and science broadcaster), Adam Rutherford (science writer and presenter) and Eric Hilaire (Picture Editor at The Guardian).

Call for Artists:
Ferrous - Steel, iron and pig iron: materials used by mankind for thousands of years. The Chinese were already making pig iron by the late Zhou Dynasty (1122-256 BC) and the usage of iron (Berlin Iron) in jewelry has been well documented.

Velvet Da Vinci Gallery and crafthaus are joining forces to create a new exhibition of jewelry that brings ferrous materials into the contemporary realm. We are looking for artists from all countries who create jewelry in ferrous materials (iron, steel, stainless steel and other iron alloys) or incorporate ferrous elements into their jewelry work.

There will be a catalog of the exhibition produced by Velvet Da Vinci with an essay by Jillian Moore. All participating artists will receive a complimentary copy. Additional copies can be purchased via the gallery.

STOP PRESS! Opportunity for craft makers to be involved in new BBC2 craft series…

BBC2 are holding a filming event at Amberley Heritage Centre this weekend, Saturday 28th July and there are a few spots left for craftspeople to demo. The show is a new 10 part commission for BBC TWO called PAUL MARTIN’S HANDMADE REVOLUTION and it’s about British crafts and craftspeople. The filming will be taking place around Amberley and they are inviting the public to come along to create a real atmosphere of celebration for craftspeople. To keep the public entertained a variety of craftspeople will demonstrate throughout the day and if anyone else would like to be involved that would be great.

If anyone is interested please get in touch by midday tomorrow, Tuesday 24th (the print shop need the final schedules by then!) with Katy Roberts atkaty.roberts1@bbc.co.uk or by phone 0117 974 7702.

The event will run from 10am until 5pm so all demos will need to be ready to go at 10am. People will need to bring all their own equipment and table and chairs. Tea/coffee and a contribution towards mileage for one car can be provided.

Unfortunately BBC Editorial Policy does NOT allow anyone invited to demo to sell their products throughout the day. Likewise there cannot be any visible branding on site so no posters, banners, t-shirts etc. If members of the public ask for a business card or a web address then that is OK to give out so long as they’re not displayed.

Copies of relevant public liability and risk assessments are required (electronic is preferable). The public may not participate in making, ‘have a go’ unless agreed in advance for health and safety reasons.

You may be asked to be filmed for the programme but this is schedule dependant and may not happen at all. There are lots of factors as this is a pilot series and the first event, weather, numbers of public, people coming on time etc and they cannot make any promises to film anyone at this stage. If the Director does want to film with you Katy  will give you as much notice as possible on the day.

We appreciate that there are quite a lot of rules but the day if people want to have a fun day meeting people and showing off their work to a new audience and get a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the show being made, then please do get in touch with Katy who will be happy to answer any questions that anyone has if they would like to call.
