The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

The very first silver exhibition at the new Goldsmiths' Centre features contemporary silver dealers, silversmiths and special guests Thalen & Thalen from Belgium. Father and son team Rob and Jaap Thalen have built an international reputation for exceptional silver vessels and sculptural silver objects. Rob, trained as a sculpture, has pushed the limits of silversmithing with pieces not normally seen at silver exhibitions. "Firstly we weld together two of the largest sections of silver the bullion suppliers can make, at a metre square each, and then Jaap and I can take up to three months to raise and finish a single vessel." Thalen & Thalen have exhibited mostly recently at the premier decorative arts exhibition SOFA in New York selling work at up to $150,000. Thalen & Thalen pieces are in private and public collections in the US, Europe and Africa. The first Goldsmiths' Centre exhibition of silversmithing will feature...

Reminder: Apply for The Fifty:Fifty Programme

Invitation to apply for The Fifty:Fifty Programme
Application deadline: 8 June 2012

The Crafts Council is delighted to invite you to apply for a new round of its collaborative exhibition scheme, The Fifty:Fifty Programme. This follows its successful inaugural partnership with Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery to develop and co-produce Lost in Lace: New Approaches by UK and International Artists.

Through The Fifty:Fifty Programme the Crafts Council seeks to develop and support the production of ambitious exhibitions that challenge perceptions of contemporary craft and reach new audiences.

The Crafts Council wishes to work with a selected partner to co-curate and develop an exhibition for delivery between April 2014 and March 2015. Funds, ideas and resources will be joined and shared equally on a 50:50 basis, with an equal contribution of £50,000 by each partner. If you are interested in working in this way, we would like you to complete and submit a pre-application form by 5pm, 8 June 2012.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I’m pleased to introduce you to the next edition of AF-L’Artigiano in Fiera, the 17th International Crafts Selling Exhibition, to be held in the pavilions of Fieramilano (Rho-Pero, Milan, Italy) from December 1 to 9, 2012.

The last edition of AF-L’Artigiano in Fiera was also established as the most important and most highly visited international event dedicated to craftsmanship. The undisputed success of this event was confirmed by the ever increasing number of exhibitors and visitors, along with the continuously improved quality and beauty of the event, as shown by last year's figures: 3 million visitors, more than 2,900 exhibitors representing 110 countries throughout the world, in a space covering a total area of 150,000 m2.

You can find here attached the general information about the fair and a Participation Project devoted to UK area.

I’m at your disposal to go deeper into the main themes of the event and to check the ways and the costs of your possible participation.

I thank you for your interest and look forward to your kind response.

With best regards,

Roberta Roffi

China - UCA Collaboration Exhibition
2009 | 2008 | 2007 | 2006 | 2005 | 2004 | 2003 | 2002 | 2001 | Press Releases 2010 | Press Releases 2011 | Press Releases 2012
At the Crafts Study Centre from 24th May - 9th June

The project started when four staff members of the jewellery course the Gemmology Institue of China, part of the China University of Geosciences visited Farnham in late 2011. The University for the Creative Arts and the Gemmology Institute aim to make links to enable exchanges and collaborative projects for staff and students studying and working on their undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

The exhibition understandably titled 'Collaboration' is displaying the work from the jewellery and metalwork students from both Universities that have just completed stage two of their courses. The students have been communicating via e-mail and Skype, enabling them to get a little feel of how each other work and develop.

This is the first collaborative project between the two Universities and the Crafts study Centre has agreed to host the show on the run up and during the same time the University for the Creative Arts is running its College show for final year undergraduate students.

The work will be transported back to China during the summer break and will arrive in time to be exhibited for Gemmology Institue of Chinas 20th Anniversary at the end of October

'This was a fabulous and challenging experience for students from two different cultures to work together, communicate their ideas and share some thoughts. It has been a challenge with language and time difference, as well as other factors, but now to have all the work together gives an inspiring and interesting collection for an exhibition, all student participants should be proud'.
Rebecca Skeels, Senior Tutor, Jewellery and Metalwork Specialism, University for the Creative Arts.

'It is the first time for us to have a collaborative art project with students from other country. By communication and the exchange of photos with young artists from UCA, we have seen different aesthetic preferences and skill sets, varying art making approaches, which provides us a wonderful multicultural art experience. It is also a good opportunity for our students to experiment with the concept of "The New Jewelry", which was rarely known by Chinese people until the late of 1990s'.
Shuyu Wu, Gemmology Institute of China, China University of Geosciences.
