SNAG Announces James Wallace as 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner,
Pam Robinson as Recipient of the 2019 Volunteer Recognition Award
Eugene, OR [March 20, 2019] - The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) has announced the recipients of its two most prestigious annual awards. James Wallace, a practicing metalsmith and Founding Director of the Metal Museum (formerly known as the National Ornamental Metals Museum) will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Pam Robinson, a former SNAG Board Member and a Chicago-based jeweler and metalsmith, will receive the Volunteer Recognition Award.
Wallace’s contributions, over 30 years, to the field of contemporary crafts, both as a highly-regarded maker and as a museum professional, have advanced the public’s understanding and appreciation of both metalwork and metalsmiths. In naming Wallace as this year’s winner, SNAG’s Lifetime Achievement Committee stated, “Jim Wallace dedicated his professional career to the advancement of the field of metalsmithing through his role as artist, teacher, mentor and advocate. But it was through his role as Founder and Director of the Metal Museum that his vision played such an important part in the evolution of our field.”
Robinson, perhaps best known to the SNAG community as a conference emcee, has been a powerful force behind the scenes on behalf of SNAG for many years. She attended her first SNAG conference in 2004 and has been committed to the organization ever since. In 2006 she took on the critical role of serving as the Co-Chair for SNAG’s Chicago conference. She joined SNAG’s Board of Directors in 2012 and served as the conference liaison until 2015. Robinson has been instrumental in organizing, planning and scheduling SNAG conferences in Chicago, Toronto, Minneapolis, and Boston.
Robinson will receive her award and be recognized for her contributions at SNAG’s Membership Meeting, held on Friday, May 24th at 11:30am during SNAG’s 50th anniversary conference in Chicago. The conference itself will be dedicated to Wallace, and he will receive his award at the opening ceremony on May 23rd.
The Society of North American Goldsmiths advances jewelry and metalsmithing by inspiring creativity, encouraging education, and fostering community. SNAG has more than 2,200 members throughout North America, South America, Europe and Asia. SNAG is online at snagmetalsmith.org. SNAG Announces Call for Entry for its Jewelry and Metals Survey (JaMS) 2019 Volume 3
The Jewelry and Metals Survey (JAMS) is SNAG’s annual survey of jewelry and metals in contemporary art, architecture, craft, and design created in the previous year by emerging and established artists, as well as students, selected by a jury of experts including curators, artists, designers, gallery owners, and historians. In showcasing approximately 200-juried objects, each publication highlights the wide range of current ideas and making practices in the field of jewelry and metals.
The 2019 call for entries will be open from April 15th through June 15th, 2019. The jury will work to select the top 100 images from the submissions; each juror will also select an additional 33 images to be published. The 2019 JAMS will be published in late 2019/early 2020.
The 2019 JaMS jurors are:
Warren Holzman, a Philadelphia based artist working in forged and fabricated metals and the owner of Holzman Iron Studio LTD. Bryna Pomp, who began her career studying art history and French at Wheaton College. In 2011, Pomp became the curator of LOOT, the annual exhibition and sale of studio and art jewelry at the Museum of Arts and Design. Lena Vigna, currently the Curator of Exhibitions at the Racine Art Museum in Racine, Wisconsin, where she curates and oversees the production and implementation of 10-15 exhibitions per year and heads the department.
This survey publication will be judged on the following criteria:
·
Creative and inventive use of medium
·
Innovation in style and concept
·
Technical proficiency, construction, and craftsmanship
·
Form and aesthetics of the piece
·
Consistency of the quality of the piece
·
Other considerations as determined by the jury
The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) invites artists, craftspeople, designers, public artists, and architects worldwide to submit images of new works focusing on metal and/or jewelry. Everyone from any sector of the field at any level of experience is encouraged to apply. Curators are also welcome to submit recent work purchased by their institution. Submissions may be entered beginning April 15 - June 15, 2019. In July and August, the jury will select about the top 100 images from the submissions; each juror will get to select up to an additional 33 images to be published. JAMS will be published and available in print format in December 2019/ January 2020. Full information is available at: https://www.snagmetalsmith.org/resources-opportunities/jams/
