The events leading up to the two weeks before the symposium.

Hi fellow crafthaus folk,The two weeks before the symposium are usually a mad dash of activity.  Committees formed earlier in the year are now hard at work cleaning the studios and other rooms, receiving and installing work for all the exhibitions that take place across town, and generally organizing the finer details of the event.  Do we have janitor's scheduled for the weekend?  Did we double check the reservations for all the rooms and spaces?  Triple check?  Do we have the appropriate number of parking passes?  Are all the housing assignments done and has everyone received an email confirming their housing arrangements?All of this takes place over the later half of winter break and many of us are on campus soon after new year's day in order to get everything in place.  We print the names tags.  Double check our food arrangements and work with the staff at the university to make sure that all of the technological needs of our presenters can be accommodated.  It is a flurry of…Continue

4th annual Material Topics Symposium--Behind the scenes part 1

Hi Crafthaus folk,My name is Joshua Mark Craig and it is my honor to introduce the 4th Material Topics Symposium to the crafthaus world.  I first became a part of Material Topics 3 years ago as an undergraduate at Indiana University.  Without knowing what to expect, my good friend Andrew Kuebeck and I drove the 14 hours from Bloomington, Indiana to Greenville, North Carolina to join what would become a yearly tradition on the campus of East Carolina University.  What we found when we got there was nothing short of amazing. The Material Topics symposium, (which is completely organized and run by the Metals students of ECU), brought together a fabulous line up of exhibitions, presenters, workshops, lectures, and even a rocking final night party with music and dancing.  I think Andrew and I new immediately that the 14…Continue

Hi, The dates for the symposium are January 18th-20th.  It should be an amazing time.
