The Bias Against Creatives as Leaders

Started by Michelle Pajak-Reynolds Jan 8. 0 Replies

A few years ago, when I was looking for new career opportunities I encountered a bias against my creativity. Granted this was the peak of the Great Recession and employers had large candidate pools to select from for enhancing their organizations. However, hearing comments such as, "In reviewing your resume, I see you've been an artist, a teacher, done volunteer work and currently pursuing your MBA.  I don't see anything professional in your history." certainly felt like a slap in the face. It…Continue

As 2012 comes to close, I'm taking time to reflect on the year, what a wild roller coaster ride it has been, and finalizing my plans for 2013. Below is an article by Gregory McKewon that makes a great point about how easy it is to become consumed by our careers and simple steps for avoiding the trap of "being too busy living to think about life!"  Happy reading-Michelle…Continue

Could your arts business survive a disaster?

I know many of us would rather talk about the fun and dare I say “sexy” side of our art businesses, inspiration, materials, and processes, than talk about business insurance. The destruction from Hurricane Sandy is unfathomable and its impact on the creative community and businesses of all sizes will be felt for some time.  Please support the Red Cross and CERF to help those affected…Continue

5 Tips for Bouncing Back

Started by Michelle Pajak-Reynolds. Last reply by Michelle Pajak-Reynolds Jun 6, 2012. 2 Replies

It really sucks when something doesn't turn out the way we planned, but like it or not failure is a valuable part of the learning process.  As an entrepreneur, I'm always fascinated by the ways in which others bounce back from adversity, be it a minor setback or a spectacular crash and burn failure.  In researching such stories I came across Scott Edinger's article "Getting Ready to Fail."  In it he outlines 5 tips for how to handle failure better so that you can bounce back quickly.…Continue

The Importance of the F-Word and Taking Smart Risks

Started by Michelle Pajak-Reynolds. Last reply by Valerie A. Heck May 16, 2012. 1 Reply

The Importance of the F-Word and Taking Smart Risks Failure.  It’s not a topic we often talk about and is typically associated with a popular four-letter F-word, but sharing the lessons we learn from failure are often far more valuable than sharing our successes. The past 3 years have taught me a lot about the importance of failure and risk.  Failure, or more importantly the fear of failure, is a paralyzing force.  It stops you in your tracks before you ever get started.  It keeps you up at…Continue

hola everyone, wanted to update you all on my progress regarding the new fashion show adventure in boston in september... (http://www.theemergingtrends.com/)

just signed a contract for a "10 looks" package and will be collaborating with a clothing designer....wow! never done this before, will have to provide 10 pieces of my jewelry, will have 5 models at our disposal and professional photography.....wow!!

will need all the suggestions and advice i can get!

Comment by Emanuela Aureli on July 19, 2011 at 4:44pm

thanks for the ongoing input everyone...this is uncharted territory for me, but it looks already like it could be interesting.

some more questions&answers brought into light yet different possibilities, besides the basic vendor table....i could be paired with a clothing designer to model and show my work on their clothing, and/or sign up for a "10 looks" package....which am not clear of  what this exactly entails and waiting on clarification.

i hear you all saying now that "this is what you want!"....so am here on the fence, waiting for them to send me the different contracts/paperwork for me to review.

and in the meantime caught this video about the event, which i found simple and informative and it helped refresh my mind with the different terminology and different perspective. all of it needed for a better understandig of the 'medium' on my side....

Recently, in June, I made work for a fashion show. It's my second year participating in these events and I must say the learning process never ends. Every show is different. Fortunately, I had the chance to meet and work with my models prior to the show which helped build a relationship and experience their different personalities. At all times, I was with them during the show dressing them up, adorning them with my jewelry, taking them backstage and walking back to the changing room. I never get to see them walking down the runway but I would rather make sure my work is being treated with respect. If something happens I am there to witness it.  Still accidents do happen. Some models are very impatient and they don't comprehend the time and effort it takes to make what we do.  Keep an inventory of all your work. I usually take a picture of them with the work prior to them walking. I have had pieces damaged by models; usually, the younger they are less patience they have. Fashion shows can be long day for the models as well as for us designers with all the hair styling, make up and waiting around. Make sure you wait until the last minute for your jewelry to be worn. Congrats! It's a fun experience! Hope this helps.

I have the opportunity to have a piece of jewelry in the fashion show during the Saint Louis Art Fair. My hesitation is, how will the piece be treated...and I don't like the idea of having the work out of my hands. But, on the other hand, it's an opportunity to have my name, booth and work featured--if even for a split second. My questions were answered (always a positive sign) and there's always risk involved, but I'm going to go ahead with it. My opinion is that we have to take risks in order to move forward and/or try new things...these risks should be intelligent and not blind...and sometimes we learn never to do things again. As long as the promoters are working with you then it could be a worthwhile risk and a positive experience

Emanuela-

If at all possible, try to get some work on some models. A lot of times at runway shows after the actual runway event (which happens in a blink) the models will continue wear the clothes & accessories off the runway so that people can get an up close look.

Comment by Emanuela Aureli on July 12, 2011 at 10:01am

will do brigitte.

all my questions (the ones i asked) were answered and answered in a very quick and professional manner.....they also provided me with 2 contacts of jewelry vendors (gee WHY don't i like that word??) who had done the event in previous years and i have emailed them yesterday for feedback...haven't heard from any of them yet.

in any case, i still think i will go ahead with this, as you suggest brigitte.

will keep the blog posted....:-)

Emanuela,

I would go through with this if I were you, BUT ask all of the questions you need answers to now. Can you bring cases to protect work if it gets busy? Where will you be located? How will the event be advertised, and, particularly important: Who is the audience?

Good luck and MUCH success!

Comment by Emanuela Aureli on July 12, 2011 at 9:40am

thanks for your comment and suggestions brigitte, and deborrah...

but i want to mention that i am not sure my pieces will be shown on someone....i was offered a table at the event to show and offer my work for sale, but it's a **non runaway option** and i took it to mean that since i do not clothing i was not signing up for that...i did ask a bunch of questions yesterday to the organizers, but did not specifically ask whether or not my work will or could be shown on models....although i understand it could happen. it is a one day only event, one of my questions was how my work was going to be advertised at their event and the answer to that was: "We will definitely include your booth name on your event website"(i think they meant 'theirs')...

i haven't yet officially communicated to them my intention to participate.....should i reconsider?

Exciting, Emanuela - would love to hear what happens, and want to see pictures!

Emanuela,

I am really glad you decided to do it! This will be great, and as Catherine pointed out, you'll be getting neat photos out of it as well.

One thing I would like to point out: Fashion shows are FAST events, the models change clothes and accessories quickly, as a result, unfortunately accidents can happen, work or accessories could get damaged or lost in the shuffle. Be sure you are behind the scenes and can assist with your pieces, or, in the event that isn't possible have someone you trust take care of your work.

It probably goes without saying, but I am going to mention it anyhow, you should have something in writing from the organizers, meaning a confirmed list of pieces (with a photo of the work) and the price of it - just in case something happens so that you can get recompensated. These guys carry insurance, so this should not be a problem.

Good luck!!! Post some photos here when it's over, please!
