Andrew Stockey, news anchor for WTAE TV (Channel 4) came to the gallery on Thursday Dec 3 to take a look at Margaux Lange's exhibition "Wearable Nostalgia: Deconstructing Barbie and Ken" for their evening main news broadcast.

Out of the 20 mins in-depth interview I gave explaining the background for "Paper or Plastic ?" and the specifics of Margaux' exhibition, they were able to show 20 seconds (!) but with lots of good images - the gallery outside/inside and many shots of Margaux's jewelry - yay !

The parting shot in the broadcast was the last sentence I gave them after they absolutely floored me with the question they really wanted to have answered (and which wasn't aired): "So, WHY does Margaux cut up Barbies ? Is there some kind of message here ?" I was fumbling for a polite response to this, and the last sentence you can hear kind of sums it up. Well, short and sweet :-)

"Wearable Nostalgia: Deconstructing Barbie & Ken"

In honor of Barbie's 50th birthday, Luke & Eloy Gallery is pleased to feature Brooklyn, NY based artist Margaux Lange with a solo exhibition of Lange's hilarious and irreverent jewelry. Margaux received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD where she graduated "Cum Laude" in 2001.

Artist Statement:
Barbie dolls were extremely significant in fueling my creative life as a child. They were controlled and manipulated to fit infinite situations of my choosing. I immersed myself in on-going narratives (complete with elaborate hand-made dwellings) where all my fears, embarrassments, joys and explorations of human interactions could be played out like characters on a stage. An invaluable tool for the expansion of my imagination as a child, ironically, Barbie continues to be such for me as an adult.

Whether you love her or hate her, there are few who feel neutral about the plastic princess. I am fascinated with who she is as a cultural icon, her distinguished celebrity status, and the enormous impact she has had on our society. Specifically, I’m intrigued with her influence in defining gender roles of women in contemporary American culture.

- Margaux Lange

POPCITY Media / Pop Filter features Margaux Lange's exhibit:

Plastic Princess: Wearable Art Exhibit

She was created by American businesswoman Ruth Handler, she was introduced to the world in 1959, she has 40 pets, and her full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts. He, on the other hand, was "born" Ken Carson in 1961, has held down 40 jobs, and is an Olympic gold medalist. So who is this golden couple? None other than two of the most popular, and oft-controversial dolls, Barbie and Ken.

To mark Barbie's 50th year in existence, Lawrenceville's Luke & Eloy Gallery is presenting the new exhibition, Wearable Nostalgia: Deconstructing Barbie & Ken. Equal parts exquisite and and irreverent, Deconstructing Barbie features work by Brooklyn-based jewelry artist Margaux Lange. In Lange's playful and sometimes surreal works, the eyes, ears and mouths of the doll world's most legendary couple are reinvented as bold brooches, bracelets, and necklaces.

Reconstructing colorful doll parts, Lange has concocted art pieces for the body that are sure to make lively conversation starters for both wearers and viewers. Lange, who's been fascinated with the queen and king of dollhood since she was a child, plays with gender roles and conjures unexpected adornments by "upcycling" parts from numerous versions of the iconic Mattel dolls.

Wearable Nostalgia: Deconstructing Barbie & Ken is on view from Dec. 5, 2009 to Jan. 16, 2010.

Don't miss the show's opening reception on Dec. 5 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Luke & Eloy is open Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
