Why plastic for you?

To keep this exhibition going for both participants and viewers, I'm curious to hear the different reasons why you are interested in the use of plastic? And what you like about the material specifically?

Plain and simple for me is that it is so versatile and fun!  You can laminate it, mix it, carve it, cast it, shape it, bake it, color it or use it already colored- It can be totally transparent or totally opaque.   There is resins, sheets, polymers, preformed pieces, clays, etc.  It can look like glass, flesh, stone, water, wood, metal...There is no end to the possibilities.
I love plastic packaging--color and cleanness. This nearly indestructible material goes in the trash for most people, but I save my packaging materials. I uses pieces of plastic in collages and paintings. Two years ago I stared melting plastics with a hear gun. It's a shame to throw all that colorful stuff away. If it were cut up and package for sale in an art supply store would cost plenty too. I like to use what is in my current geography.
I've lived all over the world and plastic package is scarce in other parts of the world, but in the US we take it ffor granted, and that's another reason I want to put it to use.
I began using powder coating because it was a great way to add color to my electroformed work as well as give those pieces strength.  I was originally using enamel mainly because I wanted color in my work but it would flake off and the electroforming process wasn't ending up sturdy enough by itself since I was plating crocheted forms. The colors from the powder coating are really vibrant in addition to the protection it gives the piece and I was soon hooked.
COLOUR.  I love mixing pigments into resin, it makes me feel like all the painting I did when I was little is being put back to use.

I'd like to know more about resin. The stuff I bought a while back isn't what I wanted at all.

What are good sources for resin?

Hello,

I work in polymer clay as one medium I use because it is so colorful with endless possibilities and it is so mallable.

It is an awesome material, available in so many formats.  I was using plexiglass and faux bone for a bit in my work. Then I took the best Penland class with Phil Renato and fell in love with foam.  The color options are amazing.  plastic is light, carvable and I agree that it feels like painting at times.

What Have I Been Up To?

Since returning from Istanbul, it has been non-stop in the workshop, preparing work for orders and making some new pieces too. I've sidelined a number of works-in-progress in order to get on with more pressing issues, so there are no updates on my Chanel-inspired piece or my tribute to Alexander McQueen, though I have progressed apace with my first foray into electronics in jewellery, "14th Century Nightlife" which I hope to finish finally this coming week after it sitting on my bench for…See More
