Satomi Kawai is asking for support in attending Munich Jewelry Week where she was invited to participate in an exhibition showcasing works inspired by a residency in Athens Greece this past January. Satomi has this to say about her work: "My visual art practice includes jewelry, printing, and drawing. My art speaks of nature and my personal femininity. I have felt a strong tie to my natural surroundings since I was a child, living in a nature-rich suburb of a local city in Wakayama prefecture. I am also surrounded by nature in Iowa City and my inspirations are abundant in every moment here. After moving to the United States, I also had to reevaluate my personal femininity with respect to living in a western culture, observe myself as a transplanted person and adjusted during the last nineteen years."
Traveling in the opposite direct is Danielle James. DJ is a fabulous metalsmith with a recently discovered passion for neon. She has been invited to exhibit her work in an upcoming neon exhibition in San Francisco. "She Bends 2: Women in Neon, which will be opening at The Midway (www.themidwaysf.com) in San Francisco on March 24th. The logistics of delivering large and fragile neon works is a bit more complicated than shipping jewelry. DJ is planning on driving her work cross country from Raleigh, NC to San Francisco, CA. She's set up an IndieGoGo page to help fund her travel expenses. You can learn more here.

Perhaps traveling furthest is jeweler, biker and solo traveler Casey Sheppard. For anyone that knows Casey, it's very obvious that her travel and biking are an integral component to her art making. Also, you know the amazing pieces she's able to make with just a few hand tools in her van. Her next big adventure is the Tour Aotearoa, a 3000km 30-day solo self-supported bike tour of both islands of New Zealand. She will start at Cape Reinga and ride an average of 86 miles a day. A big part of Casey's mission is to show girls all over the world that they can achieve whatever they put their mind to, and the importance of following one's heart. Casey is also available to speak to your group or organization. Her KickStarter, full of informative videos is here. There's only one week left to donate!

One of my favorite highlights of the SNAG NeXt conference in Asheville was the Halstead Challenge Exhibition. A limited number of members were able to snag a materials kit, provided by Halstead. Using what was provided in said kit, they then had to create a piece with a kinetic component. I was so impressed with all the works in this exhibition. For those of you that missed it, here's a link to videos of these works in kinetic action.

Thanks to Catie Sellers for uploading all these!

Also on the SNAG YouTube page is Faces of Change, the annual student slide show. I always make it a point to see the student slide show, but managed to miss it this year. I'm super excited that I still have the opportunity to check it out, and moving it to the top of my "To Watch" list. Full disclosure: This is a show I curated, and I couldn't be more pleased with how it came together.

I currently work at the Brockway Center for Arts and Technology, a non-profit organization that focuses on getting youth involved in the arts. We have an amazing clay facility and a pretty kick butt metal arts studio, designed by yours truly. We run an after school program for teens in grades 9-12, but right now we're gearing up for our 5 week summer arts intensive. We'll have our students everyday, M-F from 10am-3pm. So we're not joking around when we call it our Summer Intensive!

In the Metal Arts studio, we're going to be spending five whole weeks exploring found objects and non-traditional materials, in addition to learning all the basic metals techniques. A large part of my motivation for this exhibition was to show my students the variety of approaches to materials within our field. Brockway is a small, very rural community in western Pennsylvania, and a big part of my job for the past year has been educating people on what "Metal Arts" is and can be. One of the things I find most exciting about the field of metals and jewelry is that anything goes in terms of materials and I want to share that with my students, and hopefully inspire them to explore what they find to be interesting.

Alison Pack, Whoops, I Did it Again

One of my other favorite things about this field are all the amazing and talented people that make it up. As my residents and I were brainstorming the list of participants, I noticed that I know a lot of super awesome ladies who make super awesome work. I wanted to acknowledge and celebrate the role of women in our field and the arts in general. In fact, after I had sent out the invitation to participate, I kept thinking of more super awesome ladies I would love to have in this show. (No worries if you didn't get an invite, I'm totally planning on a Material Girls II someday!) A catchy title, and we were ready to roll.

We're having a closing reception this Friday, June 24, from 6-8pm. The gallery is open 9am-5pm the rest of the week, M-F. If you're in the rural western PA area, we'd love to have to stop by! Seriously, these women are amazing, and I'm so honored I get to display their work.

Participating Artists:

Alison Bailey

Sarah Brown

Liz Clark

Danielle James

Satomi Kawai

Galatea Kontos

Ah summer, the season that never seems to last long enough. As it draws to a close I enjoy these last long days of sunshine with a bike ride around the lakes and reflect on my favorite moments from the year so far. As I peddle and gaze across the lake I can't help thinking back to my time in Boston for the annual SNAG conference, it's hard to believe that it was over three months ago! I know I'm not the only one that had a memorable experience, so I decided to talk to some fellow conference goers to see what they thought.

I interviewed seven SNAG members that range from first timers to veteran conference goers to see how their experiences stacked up. Each week I will introduce you to the featured interviewee and share their thoughts and experiences from Boston.

First up is the talented Beverly Tadeu.

Beverly is a metalsmith and a beloved member of the craft show circuit. She exhibits and sells her work at some of the finest craft shows across the country.

"My work has a fragile, ethereal quality that belies its inherent strength and durability. The open structure of this work allows people to glimpse inside to usually unseen spaces, to the play of shadows and layers revealed. I endeavor to capture, in each of my sculptural pieces, certain elusive and contradicting qualities, asymmetry with symmetry, rawness with opulence, and fragility with strength."

Beverly is a first time SNAG conference attendee. She was invited to be a part of the program committee for the SNAGneXt conference in Ashville 2016, and thought it would be a good idea to attend the Boston conference to gain insight. Although SNAGneXt will differ from the tradition conference format (more on that in a future post), Beverly got to experience the diversity of SNAG in person. A bit skeptical of the necessity of attending the conference (as she networks with fellow artists at craft shows throughout the year) she was impressed with her experience and indicated she will attend future conferences whenever possible.

When asked about her favorite conference moments, and what she took away from the experience, this is what she had to say:

"I was awed by the breadth and depth of information imparted by the speakers. I felt changed by the experience, broadened and enlivened.

I have been a craft show artist for seven years now, and I have grown from the artists and customers I met along the way. However, that is just one arena of craft. What I found at the conference were artists and people related to the arts engaged in activities very different from the craft show world. Listening to the speakers, I marveled at the technical expertise of the artists and the conceptual nature of their work. It was incredible to see what young, new artists were doing, along with the range of experiences had by artists in the field for many years. I enjoyed hearing about the technological changes happening in the craft world and those that might come in the future.

It was also wonderful to meet and network with so many talented artists and professionals during the days we were there. I have already been invited to speak to a group in California, and I will house a vibrant nomad as she tours the US connecting craft and community, all thanks to being part of four intriguing and festive conference days.

I think what I loved most was it was all there, all together...750+ artists and professionals with whom we could commune, speakers to nourish our minds and expand our thoughts, and artwork at adorned spaces, out on the town in galleries, and at the trunk show to be seen and purchased."

A big thank you to Beverly for taking the time to reflect on her experience! Next week I will introduce you to the vibrant nomad that Beverly mentioned, the adventurous Casey Sheppard. In the mean time, feel free to share your own thoughts about Boston, or past conferences below.

** A quick note before I get into the following discussion. My name is Jennifer Merchant, I am a volunteer with the Society of North American Goldsmiths. I will be posting regular discussion topics here on Crafthaus on behalf of the SNAG organization. My goal is to raise questions and instigate conversation within our membership and beyond to address topics and concerns that are important to our community. This aligns with SNAG's vision: A diverse jewelry and metals community engaging in thoughtful conversation and critical discourse while preserving tradition and embracing innovation. The SNAG community aims to be inclusive, we value the ideas and opinions of our members. I encourage you all to participate in these discussions and to offer suggestions for future topics. We want to hear from you! **

With SNAG's annual conference fast approaching, one question remains: Are you coming?

It is no secret that attendance to the SNAG conference has declined over the past few years. But why? Is the conference becoming less relevant to potential attendees, or is it simply too expensive? A quick google search results in a number of articles detailing declining numbers in conference attendance across the board. The issue SNAG faces is not uncommon. Rising travel costs compounded with increased costs involved in the production of an event itself have made it less affordable for many to attend conferences in nearly every field. However, for an organization like SNAG these financial obstacles are of greater concern. Many SNAG members are self employed or are part of a small business. Unlike large companies that have the ability to sponsor its employee's attendance to relevant conferences, most SNAG members are footing the bill for themselves. It is no secret that although artists and creative types may have more fun and feel more fulfilled with their work, it does not traditionally result in the highest of pay. Taking time away from your studio and spending a large chunk of cash on travel and registration is daunting, no matter how much you want to attend.

Online social networking and virtual gatherings have been steadily gaining popularity as a way to keep costs low while still allowing for networking and educational opportunities. While the ability to connect with a larger number of people from more places over the internet is enticing, are these connections as strong as those that we make in person? There are a number of articles and research studies that stress the importance of connecting with your peers face to face. We are able to connect with each other more profoundly in person than online. Because of this, attending a conference can be an inspirational and energizing experience. That warm feeling of being part of a community is hard to ignore when you are surrounded by actual people that share a common interest. How do we make these opportunities for face to face connection more affordable? Is the traditional conference format still valid? SNAG's board and executive director have been looking into alternatives to scale back the conference for a new format premiering in 2016 called SNAG Next. What kinds of face to face events would you like to see SNAG organizing?

SNAG produces its annual conference first and foremost to benefit the jewelry and metalsmithing community through education, networking and community involvement; however it is also an important tool in gaining financial support to keep the organization going. Many people volunteered their time to produce this year's conference in Boston. They work incredibly hard to create programing to satisfy the community's diverse membership. The conference is a great place to meet and mingle with jewelers and metalsmiths of all backgrounds.

For those interested in attending the Boston conference (May 20th-23rd), discounted online registration is available through Friday, May 1st. This year's conference is shaping up to be quite an event (check out the line-up here), I know I'm looking forward to it!
