<p>Bio: Pasha Moezzi is an emerging Jewellery artist residing in Toronto. He obtained his Fine Arts diploma from Langara College and later attended the BFA Program at Concordia University in Montreal majoring in Design Arts and graduated in 2006. His true passion for jewellery emerged while working at his father’s furniture making workshop, where he made jewellery out of scrap pieces using very unorthodox techniques and machinery such as the table saw and band saw. Later on he decided to get the proper goldsmithing training and attended George Brown College where he graduated from Jewellery arts program in 2015.</p>
<p>Pasha’s work has a unique style influenced by industrial shapes and architectural forms, which is very evident in both his one of a kind work and his production lines. He has won several awards and competitions and has had solo and group exhibitions in Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and Tehran and has been an artist in residence at the prestigious Harbourfront Centre in Toronto since 2015. </p>
<p></p>
<p>About this Region: <span>Canada's jewellery scene has been growing rapidly for the past two decades and has became more and more involved in the international scene as well. While our community is growing we are hoping to bring more attention to the work that is being created by Canadian artists and to hopefully host more international events and festivals to make Canada one of the leading places in the creative fields. For the next two years we are focusing on bringing an even bigger and more powerful jewellery community together from all backgrounds and practices. </span></p>

<p>Satomi Kawai is asking for support in attending Munich Jewelry Week where she was invited to participate in an exhibition showcasing works inspired by a residency in Athens Greece this past January. Satomi has this to say about her work: "My visual art practice includes jewelry, printing, and drawing. My art speaks of nature and my personal femininity. I have felt a strong tie to my natural surroundings since I was a child, living in a nature-rich suburb of a local city in Wakayama prefecture. I am also surrounded by nature in Iowa City and my inspirations are abundant in every moment here. After moving to the United States, I also had to reevaluate my personal femininity with respect to living in a western culture, observe myself as a transplanted person and adjusted during the last nineteen years." <p>Traveling in the opposite direct is Danielle James. DJ is a fabulous metalsmith with a recently discovered passion for neon. She has been invited to exhibit her work in an upcoming neon exhibition in San Francisco. "She Bends 2: Women in Neon, which will be opening at The Midway (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow" href="http://www.themidwaysf.com">www.themidwaysf.com</a>) in San Francisco on March 24th. The logistics of delivering large and fragile neon works is a bit more complicated than shipping jewelry. DJ is planning on driving her work cross country from Raleigh, NC to San Francisco, CA. She's set up an IndieGoGo page to help fund her travel expenses. <a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/don-t-break-the-neon-help-dj-get-to-san-francisco#/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">You can learn more here.</a></p>

<p>Perhaps traveling furthest is jeweler, biker and solo traveler Casey Sheppard. For anyone that knows Casey, it's very obvious that her travel and biking are an integral component to her art making. Also, you know the amazing pieces she's able to make with just a few hand tools in her van. Her next big adventure is the <a href="http://www.touraotearoa.nz/p/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tour Aotearoa</a>, a 3000km 30-day solo self-supported bike tour of both islands of New Zealand. She will start at Cape Reinga and ride an average of 86 miles a day. A big part of Casey's mission is to show girls all over the world that they can achieve whatever they put their mind to, and the importance of following one's heart. Casey is also available to speak to your group or organization. <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/37372733/rebel-heart-girls-case-of-the-nomads-bikes-new-zea/updates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Her KickStarter, full of informative videos is here.</a> There's only one week left to donate!</p>

<p>So check out some awesome artists with some worthy projects and let's support each other in achieving our dreams! Thanks for reading!</p>

<div>Bio: Cyd Rowley works from her Kensington Maryland studio where she creates sculptural “vessel” pendants inspired by her fascination with containers worn on the body, and with creating pieces that can be personalized, that tell a story, and that provoke conversation and connection with others. She studied design and jewelry fabrication at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore. As an independent studio jeweler, her goal is to do work that stretches her professionally, and that is meaningful for the wearer. She is currently a board member of the Washington Guild of Goldsmiths (WGG).</div>
<div><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Plans for the Mid-Atlantic Region:</span> <br/><div>"It’s early days as the <span class="il">SNAG</span> <span class="il">Connects</span> Regional Council has just been established. As the program is currently set up, there are 12 regions, and the representatives will also be sharing info with each other during conference calls, Google Drive documents and events.</div>
<div>For most of us who are artists and makers in the metals community, our tribe is spread out across the country and the world and often many of us work in solitude in our studios. So it’s important for members to receive a brief “touch” via newsletter, social media, video conference or event to promote a sense of belonging and cohesion. Just as important is the need for the national organization to understand what it’s members are thinking, doing, experiencing, and what they need from the organization.</div>
<div>In order to promote this, my plan is, at a minimum to:</div>

This also lets SNAG get to know you as an individual, interested in being part of our community and attending our programs.</div>

<div dir="auto">“Having the scholarship was a huge deal for me. I certainly would not of been able to go to New Orleans without it. Also having the scholarship gave me some extra money to stay at the same hotel as the conference. Starting out as a student, I don’t have a lot of money, but I always save up to go to a SNAG conference. The conferences are always a wealth of information and a great time. Every penny counts and thanks to everyone who donated! Your money is very much appreciated!</div>

<p>One of my favorite events at the annual conference is the gallery crawl. There are a TON of great looking shows this year, including the Halstead Challenge <em>Memento</em> exhibition, <em>Curiosity and Reason: Selected Works by Christopher Hentz and Barbara Minor</em>, and <em>Assembling Thomas Mann</em>, among others. The Gallery Crawl will take place Thursday, May 26, 6-10pm. For full details, <a href="http://www.snagmetalsmith.org/conferences/nexus/programs-events/the-gallery-crawl/" target="_blank">see here</a>. </p>

<p>The SNAG Links Project was originally conceived of and coordinated by Linda Kaye-Moses from 1996-2001. In this project, Linda invited 12 artists to create a link (a pendant-like adornment) utilizing their unique skill-sets. The pieces were documented, then donated to the annual conference silent auction.</p>

In keeping with Linda’s concept, each year Victoria invited artists to create links <font color="#000000">and contribute chapters to the book series, <i>Linking Our Lineage</i>.</font> Each link was sold individually at the conferences.<p>The Links will be for sale during the conference with work by:</p>

<div><em>Aquatipus,</em> Argentium Silver, 22K gold, quartz by Cynthia Eid</div>
<div>The metal used to create this link was silver scrap left over from one of the Lifetime Achievement Awards made annually for SNAG by Cynthia Eid. </div>
<div>Her sculptural jewelry and hollowware is primarily made in Argentium silver formed through the creative use of hammers and a hydraulic press. Using these tools, Cynthia focuses on exploring fluidity with which metal and be moved and formed.</div>

<div><br/><div><em>Luminaire</em>, Fine silver, enamel by Valentina Moeur</div>
<div>Influenced by the moon’s illumination, Valentina Moeur’s link depicts the moon’s reflection of the sun and all the colors of the spectrum.</div>
<div>Since graduating with her BFA from California State University Long Beach, Valentina has taught youth classes and been a teaching assistant at Idyllwild Arts. She currently pursues jewelry design in her Los Angeles studio focusing her work around her preferred technique of champlevé enamel.</div>

<div class="_1mf _1mj"></div>
<div class="_1mf _1mj"><span class="font-size-3">This is one of the questions I get asked fairly frequently as a representative for SNAG. I fully understand the field's desire to hold pop up shows at our conferences (everybody and their neighbor is attending, this is a good opportunity to show work, and these events are fun,) BUT there are important reasons why this cannot and should not happen. Here they are in a nutshell:</span></div>
</div>
<div><div class="_1mf _1mj"><span class="font-size-3"> </span></div>
</div>
<div><div class="_1mf _1mj"><span class="font-size-3">----Liability – if you are hosting a pop-up show in a hotel room, you become liable for any potential injury that could happen in that room, including damages to the hotel room itself, its walls, and any amenities in the room. Individuals do not often carry personal liability insurance and because of that, the HOTEL cannot support hotel room sales. SNAG has a contract with the hotel that explicitly forbids these events and if they happen we are in breech of contract.</span></div>
</div>
<div><div class="_1mf _1mj"><span class="font-size-3"> </span></div>
</div>
<div><div class="_1mf _1mj"><span class="font-size-3">----Taxes/Business License – The City of New Orleans (our next conference location) is very strict in regards to possessing a business license and paying sales tax if you are to sell anything within the city. There will be someone on site, from the city, most of the conference checking to make sure everyone who is selling work has this.</span></div>
</div>
<div><div class="_1mf _1mj"><span class="font-size-3"> </span></div>
</div>
<div><div class="_1mf _1mj"><span class="font-size-3">----Noise – The Sheraton Hotel has a variety of guests with various sleeping needs and the extra noise of having large groups in your room can be disturbing to other hotel guests. The Sheraton asks that we respect this and do not host large group events in our hotel rooms without their prior knowledge.</span></div>
</div>
<div><div class="_1mf _1mj"><span class="font-size-3"> </span></div>
</div>
<div><div class="_1mf _1mj"><span class="font-size-3">----If you host a pop-up show, the hotel security has the right to shut down your sale and ask you to vacate your hotel room for the remainder of your stay. You will also be responsible for any and all damages to the room and everything in it.</span></div>

<div><div class="_1mf _1mj"><span class="font-size-3">SNAG does purchase a business license and liability insurance for all who participate in conference sponsored events. We even rented an extra 3500 sq foot ballroom ($$ cost on us!) where everybody is invited to rent space. If you are participating in any those events, you will be covered and SNAG will handle all sales transactions. If you have any questions or need clarification on any of this, please reach out to conference@snagmetalsmith.org.</span></div>

<div><div class="_1mf _1mj"><span class="font-size-3"> </span></div>

<div><div class="_1mf _1mj"><span class="font-size-3">I anticipate that some people will be surprised/angry/disillusioned/unhappy with this SNAG policy, but I hope that stating the reasons will do all the convincing that's needed.</span></div>
