Call for Entries Prospectus – Contemporary Goldsmithing: Tradition and Excellence

The Society of North American Goldsmiths and the jury invite you to submit jewelry and objects that celebrate attributes unique to the art of the goldsmith for the online exhibition Contemporary Goldsmithing: Tradition & Excellence.   The jurors are George Sawyer, Judith Kinghorn, and Tom Herman.

The  jurors will be looking for:


o New / recent, exceptional work made after 2011 and not previously published


o Originality, creativity and technical excellence in craftsmanship


o A balance of artistic and technical originality and creativity


o Cleverness in metalworking, the use of color, mechanical functionality and the incorporation of non-metallic elements (stones, etc)… or any combination of these, however not required to have them all in one piece


o Metal must be the predominant material and can range from the least precious to the most


o Pieces that touch the heart, stimulate the intellect, and evoke the exclamation “Wow, what a cool piece! How did they do that?”

Application Requirements: 


1. Submit 3-5 images per artist including details, through CaFÉ
• Both jewelry and art objects
• “Tangible” pieces only – no CAD renderings
• Keep photoshopping to a minimum. If Jurors cannot distinguish the photo from a rendering, the image will not be accepted.


2. A 50-100 word description or artist statement about the work


3. A one-page resume
4. $25 non-refundable entry fee for SNAG members, $35 for non-members.*  We welcome submissions from anywhere in the world.

Jurors Statement: "Contemporary Goldsmithing: Tradition & Excellence"
This is SNAG's second virtual exhibition (Submission deadline is May 31), juried by master goldsmiths George Sawyer, Judith Kinghorn, and Tom Herman. Read the Jurors Statement (attached), and begin thinking about the pieces you will submit. We are looking for high-quality images of exemplary work by contemporary, traditional goldsmiths. We welcome one-of-a-kind jewelry and objects created from precious metals. Of added interest are designs and processes implemented in response to the rising cost of materials. Each entry should epitomize the best of what is being created in the studio today.

Submission deadline is May 31.

The Call for Entries with details will be available soon on SNAG's website and through CaFE.

SNAG is looking for a few good people:

(1) Someone with experience in development who has time to volunteer.  Help us put together new materials that will help raise money for specific projects.

(2)  as part of our weekly news blog, SNAG is looking for 2-3 volunteer guest writers, whose columns would go out once a month. You know our audience and what they like.

The newest addition to SNAG's website is now live. Springboard will take the place of the email based SNAGnet as a resource for the field in terms of announcing and searching for opportunities.

Springboard can be browsed and searched on the SNAG website and subscribed to using RSS. You don't have to be a SNAG member to post or to read listings. The categories are:

SNAG update: Effective immediately the Maker Profile Pages are now a FREE member benefit, no longer a $25 add-on to the SNAG membership. The launch of these pages has been so well received that the board wants to eliminate anything that stands in the way of all members, including student members, creating their own Maker Profile on the website. Thank you to the early adopters who have made these pages so successful as a promotional tool for individuals, the organization and the field!

Call for Entry.

Faktura: ORIGIN Russian Constructivism, is the visual demonstration of properties inherent to materials

Faktura is a juried exhibition of jewelry and objects. Winthrop University and the Guild of Emerging Metalsmiths (GEM) invite all students, currently enrolled in a college/university-level metals, jewelry or designed objects program, to enter jewelry and designed objects that relate to this theme. This call for entries will reexamine the concept of faktura in this context. Objects submitted for consideration should hold a truth to materials that may be evident in the physical properties, history, origin, and/or sourcing of the materials that are used to create the work. Works for the exhibition will be selected by Susie Ganch, associate professor/metal area lead, Department of Craft and Material Studies, Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts. Faktura is made possible in part by Winthrop University jewelry and metals students and faculty, in partnership with the Winthrop University Galleries, the Guild of Emerging Metalsmiths (GEM), and Department of Fine Arts.
