I have always been fascinated with what I referred to growing up as dress-up stuff (moustaches, hats, bow-ties), as far back as I can remember, it was just always funny to put a moustache on anything.  It made me smile; it made me laugh.  I love watching classic films with symbols suggesting affiliation with an elite class, moustaches, monocles, bow-ties, umbrellas/canes, hats, cigarette holders, pipes, grooming tools, suspenders, vests, coffee, newspapers, pocket watches, etc.  I expended energy for years putting moustaches every place you could possibly think I would, now I am channeling that Bugs Bunny/Duchamp/Renegade Moustache attitude to design an art novelty line under the guise Aficionado Studios.

The Art/Novelty line starts with the “Aficionado’s Tools for Sophistication” which are whimsical, theatrical and downright hilarious items that will raise your perceived sophistication.  Each Tool for Sophistication is advertised as the NEW INSTANT FIX for what ails you.  It’s snake oil in a shiny new package; It will solve all your problems.  You just need to use the tool and ask yourself, “What would an Aficionado do?”

The first “Tool for Sophistication” from the Aficionado Studios Art/Novelty Line, the MAGIC Moustache, was just released to the public in May 2012. The Magic Moustache is a magnetic novelty brooch that can be worn on the upper lip. Each tool is launched with an Instant Sophistication Station; Sophistication Station #1 is a repurposed newspaper stand and currently resides in Long Beach, CA at Liberty Vintage 4th Street.  Each style of moustache comes in a numbered set of 200.  When those 200 are gone, that style becomes unavailable, and the next style will be delivered to Station #1.

Station #2 Is in progress in my studio now, it is destined to vend the Instant Bow-tie, available in a number of styles.

I laugh all day long in my studio- playing with the tools, designing new tools, writing notes on sophistication...  This side of my work is where I really get the chance to be silly and to make people laugh and smile.  It’s something that I’ve always had a tendency to try, when I make someone else really laugh, it makes my day. Hope this made you smile.

Steve Shelby left a comment for John Lunn
"Hi John. I love your flute. I worked at a job for 23 years making keys and the metal parts for contrabassoons. Unfortunately, there was no creativity involved. The upside is that I learned a huge amount about working with metal and making tools."

"It is a good article. It's a bit disappointing that the 3 artists they interview are men when it was so obvious that 90% of the Trunk Show exhibitors were women. I'd like to do a blog or two on the influence of women in the arts and how it…"

Steve Shelby commented on Rebecca Rose's group Showing Publicly and Building a Legacy Privately
"Hi Rebecca. I have had probably a 50% success rate entering juried exhibitions, which I think is actually pretty good. I don't do shows where you go and peddle your wares from a booth. The exhibitions I've been in are held in art museums…"
