Project 6: "Chasing on fired Precious Metal Clay pieces" (Seattle, Washington)

Title of Project:

"Chasing on fired Precious Metal Clay pieces"

Approximate Start and End Dates:

August 20, 2011 - January 1, 2012

Funding Amount: $400

Location: Seattle, WA

Project Description:

I want to investigate a potential relationship between chasing and precious metal clay (PMC). Being a chasing and repoussé artist, I have had very little interest in precious metal clay, a material that works so much like clay is one more step removed from contact with the metal.

I just took a course from Tim McCreight to see how PMC could be used in the everyday metal arts studio. The few samples I made seemed incomplete until I realized I could chase the surface to refine it and add texture. This was such an exciting realization that I am now devoting a great deal of studio time investigating it. I have found that I can mold some of my original chased and repoussé pieces, cast the molds with PMC and use the shrinkage to create a more delicate version of the original, which I will chase as well.

The downside is the expense for materials. The $400 grant would be the right amount to purchase enough PMC3, PMC+ and original PMC to see which one works the best for chasing during the next four months.

Please consider my proposal for funding covering PMC purchases for the next four months = $400. I am excited about sharing my progress on the Crafthaus blog and hope others will find it exciting as well.
