One of crafthaus’ focuses is advocacy. Advocacy for craft as an art form and advocacy for practitioners from the ambitious hobbyist level on up.

We believe that an art and craft education benefits absolutely everyone, especially those who don't do well in standardized learning and working environments, or have been through personal turmoil. As a field, we need to do more to spread the story of art and craft as a healing, therapeutic influence just as much as we need to spread our story about skill and practice.

Not everyone has the best start in life. Family background, health history, location, and many other influences outside of one’s control play significant roles in our upbringing and in how we view our world. Richard Peterson, a ceramicist and self-described ‘troubled youth’, has a startling personal story about growing up in a trailer and ultimately turning things around for himself. He sat down with Brigitte Martin, Crafthaus Founder & Editor, for an interview in July 2015 which will be posted on crafthaus in six segments over the course of the next days:

  1. Growing Up
  2. Hard Work
  3. Grad School
  4. Making and Selling
  5. I Admire
  6. Let it Happen

Update on Richard Peterson: If you followed his story you will be happy to hear that Richard has just been featured with a two-page spread in American Craft Magazine's ZOOM Section,  February/March 2016 issue! Out on magazine stands now.

This is brilliant. More of this on Crafthaus, please!

Such a moving article: I got SO angry about the bit about the school trying to medicate Richard to stop him drawing; what damn right... etc.
