22 members

Art can be a way to heal. Many artists privately face invisible medical and mental illness challenges that others are unaware of because they look, and act, absolutely normal. Some artists creatively tap into these challenges and give voice to them through a variety of mediums and styles. Invisible:VisAble, curated by artist Leisa Rich, is an art exhibition that features several artists whose art works are informed by their challenges. It is to be held in Atlanta October 30-November 27, 2015 at Abernathy Arts Center Gallery. It is these shared experiences that break down barriers between humans and lightens the load, but only if we know they are shared. Why is it often a secret? This exhibit will help us to find out.

One of crafthaus’ focuses is advocacy. Advocacy for craft as an art form and advocacy for practitioners from the ambitious hobbyist level on up.

We believe that an art and craft education benefits absolutely everyone, especially those who don't do well in standardized learning and working environments, or have been through personal turmoil. As a field, we need to do more to spread the story of art and craft as a healing, therapeutic influence just as much as we need to spread our story about skill and practice.

Not everyone has the best start in life. Family background, health history, location, and many other influences outside of one’s control play significant roles in our upbringing and in how we view our world. Richard Peterson, a ceramicist and self-described ‘troubled youth’, has a startling personal story about growing up in a trailer and ultimately turning things around for himself. He sat down with Brigitte Martin, Crafthaus Founder & Editor, for an interview in July 2015 which will be posted on crafthaus in six segments over the course of the next days:

18 members

In this crafthaus blog, I explore the intersection between gender and jewelry with a three-prong approach: interviewing artists who do not shy away from words like “gender issues,” “feminism,” and “sex”; analyzing the work of said artists and the reach of their work via questionnaires; and reinvigorating conversation about gender in jewelry by putting together an online exhibition.
2017-02-20T16:55:09ZARCHIVE: JUNK: rubbish to gold Exhibitiontag:crafthaus.ning.com,2015-11-09:2104389:Group:5267612015-11-09T19:11:03.589ZJUNK: rubbish to goldhttp://crafthaus.ning.com/profile/JUNKrubbishtogold

ARCHIVE:

JUNK: rubbish to gold playfully explores ideas of exchange, bartering, gathering, earning and giving by putting on display the entire process of creating the ‘work-of-art’.

All works available to bid on via a silent auction right NOW.

Partnering charities supplied the masses of JUNK jewellery (750kgs in total). Local businesses provided tools and equipment. The School of Jewellery provided a venue for the performance. Jewellers and makers worldwide ‘gifted’ their skills. The participating jewellers and makers by selecting pieces of jewellery from the mountain of JUNK, (re)constructed them into reimagined artworks.

By displaying the process of making as it happens at the School of Jewellery and via live-streams, we sought to shift the focus from finished object to the processes and social interactions that go into the creation of the ‘work-of-art’. The objects we present here are the results of this week-long performance.

Due to the high volume of work created, the exhibition/auction is shown in multiple parts:
