The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

Measured Making

The #150mm Challenge

30th November 2019 - 18th January 2020

Exhibition Opens Saturday 30th November 12-2pm

The #150mm Challenge is a celebration of process, material, creativity and ingenuity in forged metal. It began when Hereford College of Arts lecturer Ambrose Burne set his students a ‘warm-up’ exercise, one that he regularly sets himself, to create something interesting out of a small rectangular piece of steel, 150mm x 20 mm square. The students had three weeks to design and make something using only the specified quantity of material

The challenge went on to catch the interest of blacksmiths around the world and Measured Making features 240 artworks from 19 countries. The artworks varied from playful figurative models to functional tools and abstract sculptures, demonstrating a diverse, creative and technical exploration of form and concept, made in response to the challenge.

The #150mm Challenge continues to connect an international community of blacksmiths, revealing a rich diversity of practice and discourse. https://us6.campaign-archive.com/?u=f9762e0bca4dd19f3b4f1f1ce&i...

Surrey Artists’ Open Studios Bursaries

Every year SAOS is delighted to offer a few bursaries to artists that have not participated in open studios before, with a view to helping early career artists. Surrey Artists’ Open Studios aims to be as inclusive as possible to all artists + makers based in Surrey + its borders. We realise the importance of supporting the local artist community + these annual bursaries provide an affordable platform for emerging artists.

Our winners will be eligible for free entry to the Surrey Artists’ Open Studios Summer event 2020, worth £80, as well as free entry to one of our training courses for 2019-20: e.g. 'How to promote you and your work', worth £25.

Winning artists will need to register as a SAOS member in order to participate in these opportunities. Annual membership is £50 and you can register on www.surreyopenstudios.org.uk

Deadline is

Tues 15th Nov 2019.

To apply please email 3 images of your work together with an outline of your artistic practice and an explanation of what a bursary would mean for you.

INTERVIEW
LOVE JONSSON ON SMYCKOTEKET (JEWELIBRARY)
Rian Design Museum's Jewelry-Lending Program
by Nathalie Mornu

The Rian Design Museum, in Falkenberg, Sweden, is taking the concept of lending jewelry in a revolutionary direction for our field. Soon, with a program called Smyckoteket, visitors to the museum will have the opportunity to borrow a piece of contemporary art jewelry. (“Smyckoteket” is a portmanteau that translates as “jewelibrary.”) The point is to make borrowing a piece of jewelry as easy as borrowing a library book. More people will become familiar with art jewelry by having the opportunity to interact with and wear the work, making it more accessible to the public.https://artjewelryforum.org/love-j%C3%B6nsson-on-smyckoteket-jeweli...
