Introduction by Silvia Walz

In 2008 I had the idea of founding a working group for jewellers in Barcelona. Personally, I would have loved that idea having finished my studies at the Fachochschule Hildesheim in 1990.

University is a sort of island where the students can live out interesting ideas and make them happen without too many difficulties.

The difficulties come precisely one month after finishing ones studies: Now what?

Suddenly, survival is all that matters … What can or can’t sell? These are questions which hardly mattered when studying.

Then, those pretty thoughts and creative projects all fade into the past and one sinks easily into the everyday and any motivation for making interesting jewellery completely disappears.

The Taller Perill, founded by Alicia Giraldez gave me the chance to extend my work as a teacher at the Escola Massana, such that in 2008 I suggested the “Joyas Sensacionales” (Sensational Jewellery) project for both ex- students and jewellers who wanted to work together.

Sensations, feelings were precisely the subjects with which I wished to stimulate and motivate my group of people. The themes chosen had to be open enough to give everyone the chance to find their own way, whilst I also wished to allow space for an exchange and for open discussion.

Thus, in September 2008, I began to involve a number of innocent ex-students in my initial project, rapidly finding enough victims for the first theme “the forgotten”. The Galeria Amber-Art provided the amber and exhibited the finished works in their gallery.

Here was another important point for me: I not only wished to motivate the jewellers into making personal work, but also hoped that these pieces could be shown in galleries and further, that they would sell.

In this way, over the past nearly 5 years we have shown different projects in various galleries in Spain, Andorra and Germany.

So far the group comprises 16 artists nearly from the beginning and every year there are some of the graduated students who join some month in the group. Depending on the theme, there are guest artists who have formed part of the project’s display.

I hope that we can still share many sensations and that this project has plenty of life ahead.

Who wouldn’t want to live on an island where the market isn’t the driving force?
